Ó

I'm certain that by now most people have heard of Cave Story. One of the most popular freeware games among gamers, its popularity has grown to a point that thousands upon thousands of people now play it. It's an 8-bit 2D adventure game that borrows elements from the 2D Metroid and Castlevania franchises. Now we hear from 1UP that Cave Story might soon be released for the PSP.

Where 1UP got this information is puzzling. I can't find any information other than what they say, but seeing as they're a major video game website, it seems promising. There are a few problems though. Sony is usually reluctant to publish 2D games, and one that features 8-bit graphics might be pushing it. Also, the creator is really reluctant to have his game distributed with a price tag attached.

If all goes well, the PSP may just have a title on par with Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.  Check back with us for updates.

PS: Thanks to  an anonymous commentor, we've received more information on this. The game will feature updated graphics and sound, but an original version will be included as well. Read more about it  by clicking "Read."

how is it 8 bits when they would redo the graphics?

I haven't seen anything that would imply that they're going to re-do the graphics. Like many PSP games, it looks like it'll be a straight port. Maybe with a special level or something.

How would that even work?

That's the thing. He doesn't like how it would have to be sold at a price. He wants it to remain free. But of course, UMDs cost money and retailers won't sell something they won't profit from. He'll have to give in if he wants it on PSP. I don't know if the average PSP owner would buy it thought. Everyone should give it a whirl on the PSP. It's completely free.

 » Psp Does...

Psp Does have 2 games on par with Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

They are called : GTA : LCS and Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror.

It could still be Free. They would just use the PS1 Emulator.

» remember the SONY Game Emulator?

Remember how Sony said they were going to release a "emulator" of sorts? Maybe Cave story will be released as a freeware Sony homebrew title in the future

» Well, there is always an alternative...

...Perhaps he would agree to work with a programmwe who frequents this site and create a PSP homebrew version of the game. Or he could make a deal with SONY and have it released as a game that can be played from the memory stick like PS1 titles SONY intends to release for their so-called PS1 emulater, only in this case not charging people for it. Perhaps putting an ad or two in the game would be a fair tradeoff for porting and encrypting this game to work on the PSP.

Either way, the idea of a freeware programmer creating a port of a freeware game to another system that people will have to pay for does seem way too farfetched.

I read otherwise, whats the point of porting a freeware game you cand ownlaod off the net for free?

#5: GTA and Syphon Filter, aside from not being as great as Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, aren't in the same genre.

#7/#8: That's a very interesting idea I hadn't thought about!

#9: That's also a great idea that hopefully might happen! But he might want some kind of mainstream release as well...

#10: Where did you read it? I'd like to know.

I remember first hearing about Cave Story, it was always pretty fun... but problem with me i dont play things if theyre not portable, this would allow me to finish the game. I have a friend who actually thinks its more than PERFECT for the GBA, and i totally agree.

that same friend sent me that same link for it as well, glad that it got posted in the comments. Maybe the link can be added to the actual post above??

in my opinion, Sony will never accept without profit, CS will be sold if made as a published game for the PSP, sadly :(

 » this game rocks

this game rocks it would be very cool to play this game again but on the psp. I think that it would be better to port this game as a homebrew so that it would be free.

Graphics don't make a game 8 bit or not, an 8 bit game runs on an 8 bit processor.(IE nes)

The PC does not have an 8 bit processor, therefore, this is not an 8 bit game.

When you play an emulated ROM on the PC, you're playing a 16-bit / 32-bit / 64-bit game on a non-16/-32/-64 bit PC. Your logic is flawed. Good try.

Also, it's about time those idiots over at 1UP finally got wind of the news.

 » Cave Story

The situation is a lot more complicated than it seems.

The original programmer of Cave Story is this Japanese guy called Pixel. Really talented but very private and modest, he also doesn't seem to speak much English. He never intended Cave Story to come out for the PSP or any other platform.

Variant Interactive, a dev studio which may or may not be serious about this approached him and after various translated email exchanges came to some agreement, after which the Variant guys proudly announced CS on their website. Later when people posted about it on Pixel's BBS, he was surprised and said he didn't agree to something like that. So looks like something was lost in translation, Pixel is indeed reluctant to have his freeware game sold. It seems they are doing more negotiation via email using a translator (*****zu from the Cave Story LJ community)

More complicated is the whole logistics of selling the rights to a game like this - is it only PSP rights, or handheld rights, or all rights alltogether? Would the game stay free for the PC? Pixel has given out the source code recently to other homebrew enthusiasts for a GBA port, how about that. Plus the issue of the translation being a fan work, and Variant don't have the right to re-use that either, meaning they have to re-translate the game.

Not to mention the whole thing about Sony beingreluctant about non-flashy-ooh-look-nextgen games and the fact that Variant hasn't actually produced anything worth mentioning and seem to want to ride the coattails of Cave Story's indie success.

So it's all very complicated, weird, and personally I would wish for a direct, non-updated homebrew port that would stay free.

» Uhhhh...just wanna add this in

It's an 8-bit game because it was designed for an 8-bit system, you can emulate an 8-bit system with a more powerful system.
