Capcom Play System 3 - Image 1

Fans have been clamoring for it for years, and finally we are all one step closer to CPS3 emulation. After about two months of hard work, the encryption in the Capcom Play System 3 has finally been broken down by a coder who goes by the name of Andreas.

This new development doesn't actually guarantee CPS3 emulation just yet, as MAME developer David "Haze" Haywood points out. The decryption's already done but the emulation side of the equation still has a ways to go. Nevertheless, this is without a doubt one of the many memorable emulation milestones in recent years.

If you're wondering what CPS3's decryption will bring to the emulation world, here's a list of titles that run on CPS3. It's pretty short, but the games on it are quite good, cementing the CPS3's rep as an extremely powerful 2D system with smooth, fluid animation.
  • JoJo's Venture
  • JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
  • Street Fighter III: New generation
  • Street Fighter III, 2nd Impact: Giant Attack
  • Street Fighter III, 3rd Strike: Fight for the Future
  • Warzard/Red Earth

I can't wait to play Street Fighter III on my PSP. Wait, nevermind. The PSP's D-PAD is crappy so it'll be hard to execute moves and combos.

Do what other people have done with their PSP.

Take apart the PSP and remove the rubber D-Pad. Open up an old Nintendo joypad and remove the rubber D-Pad. Place the Nintendo's rubber D-Pad where the PSP's was and then put your PSP back together. Voola, fixed D-Pad. :)

PS: Avoid if you don't want to "void" your warranty.

shut up... the D pad is more than enough to play Street Fighter..

 » D-Pad...

All the D-pad needs is some extra padding. Remove the face plate (All you need to do this is a screwdriver and unless you are an idiot there is no way anything internal can be easily damaged by doing this) and find something adhesive (it can be tape or a band aid or anything else as long as it sticks), cut it into small squares and and stick it to the bottom of the D-pad where diagonals do not work properly. It may take some trial and error to get the right amount of padding in the right areas using this method but you can always add more tape/band aid/whatever or remove some if things still do not work. Talk about a band aid solution!

Oh, and when replacing the front plate I would recommend using compressed air to remove any dust in between the screen and the face plate, this can be purchased at several major electronics stores. It is much easier than trying to wipe the dust off.

D-pad is only good in newer motherboards (TA-082 + up) Kind of ironic as it was before the "cursed" motherboard. Now I like it more than my friends TA-79 lol

damn! so If i want to play fighters, all this time, all i have to do is get a TA-082 O_O... I think maybe i should be able to grab one from ebay when i get some money... this is great news.. This is the kind of crap qj should report.. not the 5th final fantasy 7 preview.

To play this on the computer is cool, to eventually be able to play on the PSP is the dream.

I really hope NJ does something with this on the Psp. This could be the perfect project for him and a suitable challenge that his knowledge gained from the previous emulation would help.

whats this got to do with the psp.

i cant wait for a port, (NJ?) cause the CPS1 and 2 emus are amazing (tho i wonder if the psp has enough power to pull this off)

(now that i think about it) i doubt there will be a psp port, so i hope for a port

 » CPS3 Specs...

Main CPU (conjecture):
Hitachi SH-2 at 20 MHz (possibly two)

Storage:
SCSI CD-ROM drive

RAM (variable amount)

Flash ROM: 8 x 16 MiB

Total on-screen colors: 4096

Resolution, pixels: 512x384

According to these specs from wikipedia: the PSP can more than likely run the CPS3.

Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike, and Jojo's Bizarre would be a dream to play on the PSP. Can't wait for an emulator!

   Re: Nope (Unregistered) - 2007-06-10
 » Wrong, sorry :-(

CPS2's weaker and the PSP struggles to emulate that with certain games and ends up hitting the mem-limitation too, CPS3's definitely not doable but you can always pray for a miracle.

Re: Mr. D In Action (Unregistered) - 2007-06-16
 » @ Nope

Obviously you don't know the facts. If we get a BETTER CODED emulator it will run much faster. It depends on the emulator, not much depends on the system specs.

   Re: FH (Unregistered) - 2007-06-21
» CPS3 Specs and PSP emulation

Yeah, look at the flash rom specs. There's nowhere near enough RAM. I don't think you could do a decent emulator on X-Box, much less PSP. Keep in mind those flash roms contain *compressed* sprite and tile data. You'll need more RAM for the decompression (which is done by hardware, not program code) and then the RAM the game itself uses.

Theoretically you could probably do a full decompression to memory stick and have the emulator thrash your memory stick like mad to keep just what's needed in RAM, but...

I don't think it'd run anywhere near fast enough. It'd be hacky as hell, and prone to errors, and the PSP just isn't going to be capable of doing a full proper emulation of this.

So, don't get your hopes up.

but it probably wont come out for a while, lets just hope NJ comes back and devs a CPS3 emu!

» CPS3 Street Fighter and Then Some...

Well, the N64 hits the PSP in the gonads, but that hasn't stopped its emulation. It's just a matter of time. The PSP is more tha capable to handle this system. It's just the problem of porting and coding correctly to the system. The only problem is emulator overhead, but the PSP is physicallly (spec wise) better than the Dreamcast, and all the CPS3 games played like a dream on it. Although they were no longer CPS3 when they hit the Dreamcast, but I can imagine the resource demand must have been similar.

One more thing, Andreas has become a god in human form . All we need is someone to port this crazy driver to MAME and all hell will break loose from there. For those who said that pigs will fly before this is emulated, I have one thing to say, "I see and smell flying bacon and it looks delicious". God bless the free world, and hackers.

you can actually play JOJO if you convert the PSX version. It looks jusy as good on the small screen and it has alot of modes the arcade didnt.

Well all I can say is if Sony makes so you can purchase the game in the fall....then whats the point.....?? Oh I remember now its the fact that people that dont have a Playstation 3 can play these games too.....so if you are the ones like me that loves Dark Alex for the custom firmware that he puts out....then Im all in support of the one that cracks this one.....this is a dream come true for all the believers.....!!!

You are a true IDIOT and don't know ***** about custom firmware. Sony adds the features, Dark_AleX just cracks some of them to be more open to development and removes limitations.
