Jeff Gerstmann - Image 1When word got out that GameSpot veteran game reviewer Jeff Gerstmann got "fired" from his position, the Internet lit up with reports linking his termination with a negative review of a certain game. GameSpot now breaks its silence on the issue and published a statement in its site.

Ryan MacDonald, executive producer of GameSpot Live, says, "Though he will be missed by his colleagues, Jeff's leaving does not affect GameSpot's core mission of delivering the most timely news, video content, in-depth previews, and unbiased reviews in games journalism."

"GameSpot is an institution, and its code of ethics and duty to its users remains unchanged," he continues in his written statement.

GameSpot, however, remained mum on the specifics of Gerstmann's departure. "Due to legal constraints and the company policy of GameSpot parent CNET Networks, details of Gerstmann's departure cannot be disclosed publicly," writes the GameSpot staff.

GameSpot, however, made it clear that amidst all the rumors, the decision to terminate Gerstmann is not linked in any way to their site's advertisers. "Neither CNET Networks nor GameSpot has ever allowed its advertising business to affect its editorial content," says Danny Braman, CNET's Vice President for Programming.

"The accusations in the media that it has done so are unsubstantiated and untrue. Jeff's departure stemmed from internal reasons unrelated to any buyer of advertising on GameSpot," he concludes.

Gamespot are trying to cover their tracks, but we already have the facts.

F*** CNET. That is BS and they know it. I'm not planning to go to GS for anything game related anymore. Just forums/unions.

I really could care less because I only use the forums on GS, I haven't read a preview or review from there since San Andreas. I always come here for news and IGN for previews/reviews/other news.

Did anyone really expect GameSpot to come clean? That would be like a company ready to admit they don't hire handicapped people - it's not going to happen. But I'm sure you still won't be allowed to talk about this EXTREMLY RELEVANT issue on the GameSpot or Eidos forums. Corp. BS for the win! Tee hee!

If there were any personal or internal reasons for Jeff's being fired, then I think GS/CNet would have abandoned any moral or ethical reasons for keeping mum about his termination long ago. The only reason I can think of why they are skirting this issue is that the rumours ARE true and that they ARE guilty of "pandering to the highest bidder".

In that case I would think some of the conspiracy theories regarding GS being a "paid tool" for Microsoft that have arisen in the past might have some substance. Then again, what do I know? These are just guesses.

What do you folks think? I would be interested to know.

I'm going to assume that GS isn't a 'paid tool' for MS since generally they give games low scores (360 ones at least) and people always whine about the scores in the forums

Did you read the GS review of Ratchet and Clank? It slammed the game for having "too much diversity" and "not enough of an identity". You tell me, are these valid reasons for rating a game low?

I read Gamespot reviews, but pay no attention to the scores they give. They are way off what I would rate most games, and now I see why....

Advertising dollars definately influence game ratings I think.

"pay no attention to the scores they give"
-> Agreed, but damn, isn't it hard to read a review and yet ignore the score? I mean, it is there IN BIG FONTS :)

 » publish the review

why dont they publish the review that he was supposedly fired for than the fans will have the complete facts to make up their mind about gamespot/cnet
but than do gamers trust them enough that they wouldnt alter his review before putting it back up

If Jeff Gerstmann wasn't fired because of his review for Kane & Lynch then why was the video review removed and why was his written review editted. All the facts point to Jeff's Kane & Lynch review. The Kane & Lynch ads were removed after the video review, Jeff's video review has been removed from the website, Jeff's written review was editted to make the game seem a bit better. Just compare the video review which can be seen on youtube.com and compare the written review. It's different.

That sounds like malarkey.

His review is back up, perhaps Gamespot is trying to save face, just what in hell is going on?
