Bungie Studios - Image 1It's official: Bungie Studios and Microsoft are parting ways. A press release from Microsoft announced today that Bungie Studios will be embarking on a path to become an independent company. This confirms earlier rumors of the Bungie-Microsoft split.

Microsoft will still retain an equity interest in the studio. Microsoft Game Studios and Bungie will be continuing their publishing agreement for the Halo IP as well as other future Bungie projects. According to Bungie studio head Harold Ryan, the studio will continue to focus primarily on video game development for Microsoft platforms.

Shane Kim, Microsoft Game Studios' corporate vice president, also assured people that they will continue to invest in "a new interactive series set in the Halo universe" with Bungie and other partners including director Peter Jackson.

that's a pretty hefty blow to M$ in their whole taking over the world thing. Oh well. Can't wait for more great games from Bungie. Good people those bunch. Met em' in Redmond T Center at the H3 launch. Wish them the best.

... wonder what they want to make...

I wonder if this will have a big effect?

actually i think this is good for everyone on the consumer side and even business, halo fans still get some halo offshoot titles, and bungie gewts mre self motivated projects, which is a huige plus, andm ost of it will stay on 360 but bungie will have the option to make a new ip for ps3 or wii if they rly want to.... not likely but its there for multiplat

Bungie will be developing a new IP as well as Halo 4. MS have a huge pocket full of the money from the sale of Bungie shares. 360 owners get more creative Bungie titles without the MS interference. Except we'll get the same MS marketing that drives PS3 owners nuts months on end. Doesn't sound too bad does it?

» The only problem with this is

Bungie is still going to stay with MS to develop games. So don't expect PS3 games or wii from bungie.

» Not sure how i feel about this

On one side they will have more creativity but I like how Microsoft ensures their game is top notch before it leaves the factory. Although with all the game scratches, failing boxes, etc. i'm still not sure how i feel about m$ anymore. Oh well i'm still enjoying bioshock and halo3 on it and i've sent my box back once for free so really it's hard to complain too much since it's free now. At least their system actually has some good games where as the other system just has a lot of hope.

When I get my 360 back I will be on my third console. I got to play Halo 3 before I shipped it off for repairs because the only thing wrong with it this time was the Ethernet port, but I didn't get to play online. I'm no Sony fanboy or nothing but they do have a better console and more than just hope. Halo 3 was a great game no doubt about it but it's not the masterpiece they make it out to be. Honestly I thought Gears and Bioshock were both better than Halo 3. every other title I'm looking foward to this year os for the PS3 so I guess ican afford to have my 360 away on repairs for however long it takes but it shouldn't be that way. They should have took their time with the damn thing and made a quality product instead of rushing it out the door to beat the competition to the market. My first onw broke down on me 2 days after purchase and it wasn't even hot, I had just turned it on that day and it red ringed on me. I've had no problems with my PS3 and I don't expect to either.

This will probably mean nothing in the long run. MS will still publish there titles, they just will make more money and have the ability to release on different platforms.

» bungie were great are great and will remain great.

Bungie long before the xbox came were doing there own thing. They were making games for Mac when Mac was regarded as dead. They are stubborn and do what they want. Halo was an extension of what they wanted but i really hope that they do Oni 2. Oni for the Mac was pre Halo and was brilliant. The gameplay for its day was totally new and has been copied by many developers for PC games.
As for Halo the chance of a Halo 4 is very real, after all the door was left open with the final words "wake me when you need me"

 » Bungie is Free.

heck yes, now that hey are split Bungie doesnt HAVE to make games exclusively for Xbox 360. The can now release Halo 3 for the PS3 if they wanted to with no one to stop them. If they release Halo 3 for the PS3, it means nothing but more money for Bungie.
