Wii - Image 1

It's no secret that the Wii's enjoying the limelight in this leg of the next-generation console race, all thanks to its motion-sensing capabilities with the Wiimote that had not only gamers off the couch and moving around, but also got the non-gaming demographic into the hobby of playing video games. However, David Braben, veteran games developer and the mind behind titles such as A Dog's Life, Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 and Thrillville, thinks that the Wii is merely a fad, and will fade into obscurity after the public has had enough about it.

In an interview, David Braben compared the Wii with the EyeToy, in the sense that people also thought highly of the PS2 camera, but soon got tired of it. His statement, snipped from the interview and in verbatim:

What's interesting is that people are talking about the novelty of the Wii as if it’s something completely revolutionary but actually we went through this same process with EyeToy, which allowed for gaming where you can stand up and do active physical things, but the EyeToy as a device lasted maybe eighteen months before people got bored with it, so that’s something that we should bare in mind with the Wii.

While I personally can agree that the EyeToy was indeed revolutionary for its time, it didn't get quite the amount of software support from Sony. Of course, there are the titles such as Eyetoy: Play and so on, as well as the games where they feature the EyeToy as an optional control device, but it didn't really get the sort of support that the Wiimote's having right now. We need only to look at some of the games (i.e. Manhunt 2, Trauma Center: Second Opinion, Super Mario Galaxy) to see how well the "gimmick" is supported.

Well, that's Braben's and yours truly's two cents about the Wii. How about you, dear reader? Have anything to share about the Wii being a fad? Let us know by your comments!

» that may be true to me, but.......

i had gotten sick of eyetoy after the 1st day of extreme fun like i did the wii, but lots of people i know did not get sick of these for months. So just because the experience of wii is like that to him doesnt neccessary means that everyone agree, I do agree with this guy 100%.

Ya you gotta agree but its like when you're the herd you follow and thats the Sheeps basic instincts. So I glad you agree. Its nice to see the system in place.

 » this guys opinion

doesn't even matter. his games were more like fads that only lasted like 4 days.

he shouldn't even be allowed to state an opinion about fads and what fails or doesn't. people only play his games for like a few weeks and then go to something else. ive never seen anything fun in rollercoaster tycoon except killing the little people with a trainer hack

 » Eye Toy

The lack of products for the Eye toy killed it. Imagine, you could have done a game where you are invisible on the screen but use movement to select options, let's say for a rpg, on screen. But why do that when you have a contorller to do so....so that is what made the Eye Toy go MIA. But if it is so unpopular, why are they making one for the PS3?

» wii is not camparable to eyetoy

yea eyetoy didnt have much support and few games supported the feature. even the 360 live vision camera is MIA. not many support the feature.

» its becausethe wii-remote is the main controller

had the eye toy been the main way to controll the ps2, then people would have used it more. The reason why people are getting a bit bored (me included) is beacuse of the libary of games. On another not, the other ps employee interview, the guy stated that the wii is a fad, and by the time developers make games that appeal to that audience, they would have already changed their likeings. These interviews were made to try to get people not to invest in the wii. even then how long does it take to make a party game? something a bit more complex like ddr would take a while, with all the timming of steps, but for simple ones like boogie, it does not take that long, i estimate 6 moths at most.

   by GamerGuyDude - 2007-07-28
 » It's all about support

The EyeToy never got the support that the Wiimote has. Essentially all Wii games are required to use it. While they are allowing for optional GameCube controller use, I believe there are no Wii games that REQUIRE the GameCube controller.

If the WiiMote was an accessory, I might agree with this man's opinion. However, the control scheme is inextricably linked to the Wii itself meaning as long as the Wii survives, so will the "gimmiky" controls.

   Re: WangChungsWii (Unregistered) - 2007-07-28
 » thats it thats it

It is all support if support not there wall crumble and if wall crumble public flee. So Wii have strong wall Wii the people like. Eyetoy is dust in wind that get caught in Eye make teary and fall on cherry blossom. I hear a bird swallows. What. I don't know where I am anymore. I'm going back to play pokemon diamond.

 » Other Selling Factors

Opinions like this and the one from Sony are based on the incorrect assumption that the only reason the Wii is selling so well is its motion sensitive control.

That is simply not true.

While it is one factor in the Wiis popularity, there are quite a few more including:

* Low price / High value
* Quality Nintendo games featuring iconic mascots
* Family-friendly orientation and ease of use
* Focus on same-console multiplayer
* The "Mii" factor

   Re: mohaas05 (Unregistered) - 2007-07-28
 » lets see

1. Low Price/Outdated Hardware

2. Games that feature mascots for the 500th time

3. That and complete ignorance to the traditional gaming crowd

4. True but completely ignores online multiplayer

5. Won't be exclusive with the advent of Playstation Home

» market menipulation attempt. its a fad everyone give up on your wii now! before its too late !!!! lol

The market still does'nt believe the average consumer knows what they want.
Its a fad they say. as if people didnt know what they wanted when they went to the store and bought the wii.

It's insulting, and to add to that, they felt the need to announce and press the issue that they believe the wii admist a console war that has given nintendo more sales per quater then the ps3 and 360 combined.

Its funny how the market likes to menipulate the public as they do. whats more amazing though is that most of the time. It works.

 » Hi Geezie,

I think what you think is just that. Its thinking. Its an opinion based on you and your tastes. So to say you can simply do more maybe it is better said simply "I" can do more and not involve the general public. OK -_^.

The Wii is a console the Eyetoy is a peripheral (duh lol) I think this whole article is just too naive and vague for a discussing technological matters.

Way to drop the ball topic poster, way to drop the ball. Hopefully one of the other better smarter editors on this site will catch it lol. RC you silly goose. When will you learn. VG journalism isn't like when you play pretend in school. Wake up and write something that isn't blistering dreadfull.

No we don't need him involved. Sheesh. Well Davy B. is more PC oriented dev so you could very well have a point. To say the least look at the DS to PSP and now look at the Wii, PS3, 360.

Discuss.

» yeah, a fad like the DS

IGN just got a hands on try at metroid prime 3 and and said the controls show exactly what shooters should be like on Wii and are amazing. That's a big part of today's gaming that Nintendo hasn't done well with in the past and that's just part of what makes Wii more than a fad. Not to mention that idiot's like this guy who have no true creativity or forsight whatsoever (rollercoaster tycoon?!) said about DS and how PSP will beat it but now DS has doubled PSP's worldwide sales.

 » uhm

Motion sensitive: Yes it can to that, but leave that swiched off you still have a very accurate, fast, easy to use pointer + an analog stick in the other hand -> this alone is better than traditional controllers for alot of games...

   by Stealth! - 2007-07-29
 » Well

I don't know about tyou but the wii remote is the only thing making the system sell, the games for sure aren't. The wii fit is also involved. So i do believe this, and just like Jack Tretton said if the market shifts from what they want, the wii will be there dying.

The Wii is like a GAME/TOY itself not a console. PS n Xbob are more like a PC that r able to provide longevity with real killer app software(games? of crs!).

Its evidently selling yes. But so do the ocasional toys that become a fashion coz the wow factor explodes rite at ur face i.e POGS, Tazo, digipets n crap etc. How long do they last

Until ppl actually buy games other than Wiiplay/sports mario or wotevr, im not changin my opinion.

thats my 2 pence(wotevr that means)

 » i'm taking my time

I've held off buying any next gen system until I knew alot about them. We will buy a wii, it is backwards compatable (a big plus for us) and has a decent library. The wiimote seems gimicky but if it is as great as everyone says... I am holding off on a 360 or ps3 until there are a few more titles released. The author (David Braben) of this article's commentary reminds me of the 1960s IBM Officer who thought there was a worldwide market for maybe 5 computers total.

   by FrostyBarleyPop (Unregistered) - 2007-07-29
 » ps

by the way how many eyetoys were sold vs. the wii.
also, what was the software support and how many titles did each have (i realize they still produce games for both). Mr. Braben might take the advice I give my 8 and 9yr olds "think carefully before you say something. It is better to be silent and thought an idiot than to open your mouth and remove all doubt." Mr Braben might be an excellent game programmer but he obviosly is lacking in the marketing department.

   by RK (Unregistered) - 2007-07-29
» how many games does the eyetoy even have?

i can agree that 'gimmick' or novelty things such as the eyetoy can run thin.. but think of how many games actually came out for eyetoy.. all that really came out was the original game that came with it.. and maybe a couple of exercise games. Wii has a bunch of games where you can play tennis, golf, and jump around.. but its also got a few games where you can sit down and enjoy yourself all the same (zelda, excitetruck, resident evil 4) so to say that wii relies exclusively on motion detection isn't necessarily correct and shouldn't quite qualify as a gimmick console.

And whoever wrote the interview.. didn't they use the wrong "bear"?

"so that’s something that we should bare in mind with the Wii."

» this guy needs attention from his wife or something

I'm tired of *****s saying ***** and being wrong half the time. so many people still listen to them. if you stopped paying attention to them they just might shut up.

The eye toy and the wii are two different things. just because they both have video games in common doesn't mean *****.

If the playstation 2 was built around the eye toy then he might have a valid statement, but everyone knows it was a second class accessory that barely anyone supported.

So my point is that if it was better supported then maybe it would have worked better/longer. also the same types of interactivity arent' possible with the eye toy. Wich I could go into but would be a waste of time cause it wouldn't shut up all the dumb asses anyways.

» How is the wii a fad?

I dont remember a gaming console ever becoming a fad after being the most popular since its launch date... the wii hasnt really even gone online yet and theres tons of accesories coming out....I mean it already has more exclusives that the 360 in under a year. ps3 and 360 is the next level of graphics while wii is the next level in gameplay. I have a wii and a ps3 and I play my wii alot more until some Good ps3 games come out. I dont know how you can compare an eyetoy with 3 1/2 games to the most fastest selling, most exclusive, cheapest, and most popular system out right now. Of course the wii isnt a fad, it hasnt stop selling since realese and isnt even atits peak with games yet. Just wait to some online fps comes out.

by Susie from the block (Unregistered) - 2007-07-29
 » pssh Wii will outlast

The PS2 and PS3 eyetoy are nothing like the wiimote because you wouldn't be able to play any serious games like RE 4 with the eyetoy. Its just a motion sensor to your whole body. If it were more specific which it isn't that would be different like just pinpoint the camera to just use your arm for the game like in first person shooters but thats somewhat impossible. Nintendo has the right idea and has done it well with the wiimote.

Everyone was excited when they saw Wii for the first time and people are still excited you can't say that for the rest of the competition thats out right now.

 » Let him say that...

Mr "The Wii is fad" won't be laughing as much, when the Wii outlasts the Ps3.
Face it. The Wii has more exclusives, Mario, Metroid, Zelda, and then some, whilst sony has, what? Assassins Creed (Which I could get on 360) and Killzone 2 (Meh..). Big Wow. I don't hate sony, or Ps3, I'm just saying that it isn't doing very well in the console war, what with 360 and Wii being ahead of it for several months with no sign of stopping.

   by daftpunk (Unregistered) - 2007-07-31
 » Sounds familiar

"Wii is a fad"

That's what Bill Gates said about the Mouse when Apple introduced it.

Plus, to compare to the EyeToy? The Eyetoy was actually passive- it just observed movement.

The Wiimote receives, stores, transmits and processes data. It senses motion, button inputs, and provides audio and vibration feedback. It does everything a gamepad does. Plus it's wireless.

The worst thing you could say about it is that it smokes batteries.

   Re: abc123 (Unregistered) - 2007-07-31
 » yup

Sounds very familiar even with sony psp and the ds, everyone was excited at first for the psp but then the ds took over with its libriary not to say the psp isnt awesome but the wii has a great start already and the Wiimote as the poster above me said it stores and transmit data senses motion its perfect for a new way of gaming. Nintendo has once again rocked the gaming world as they did with their first system the nes.
