How do you make money when you've got a really high gamerscore, and it gets featured at mygamercard.net?  If you're Rance6, you go to eBay, sell your Gamertag, toss in the hard drive and wait for the bids to come in.

We've written about this before, and at that time, Victor B. saw that it was going for around $ 5000. As I write this, this is what I see on eBay: it's going for $ 6000.

6K for a GamerTag

The price has already gone up by a thousand dollars. People are bidding and Rossko of Xboxic thinks that this is ridiculous. He says that he's having a very hard time getting around the idea that people are willing to pay large sums of money for something that they can get for free if they invest enough time and effort into it. He's wondering if Gamerscore points matter that much to people? He's asking if people really are that obsessed. He notes that other services can give you the Gamerscore you desire for less amounts of money.

Well, factoring in eBay's bid system, perhaps people just think that the time and effort Rance6 put into getting the Gamerscore is worth the $ 6000 they're bidding. Honestly, some of us here at QJ think that it's more of a sign of people's respect for Rance6's achievements than a sign of people being lazy and just wanting to have other people level/farm/work/build their gaming things for them.

Still, we get Rossko's point. After all, wouldn't you feel a lot better if the Gamertag and the Gamerscore you've got were your own?

 » Simple economics.

"He says that he's having a very hard time getting around the idea that people are willing to pay large sums of money for something that they can get for free if they invest enough time and effort into it."

That's just simple economics. There's nothing in this world you couldn't have for free if you were willing to put enough time and effort into getting it yourself. Some people have much, much more money than time. And some of those people just absolutely -have- to have the best of everything they do.

Do I think it's silly? Yes. It's not worth that much to me. But then, buying a lvl60 whatever in WoW isn't worth it to me, either. For me the fun is in getting there and saying 'I did that.' For them, the fun is in the bragging that they have the best.

The joke is on them, though. Just because he has the highest score now doesn't mean they can maintain it. They'll have to either become the gamer that they are not, or pay someone to maintain their score.

 » Okay, duh.

Okay, I figured it out. These huge bids aren't being placed by gamers. They are being placed by the 3000point companies.

This account would be a huge asset for them. With it, they can hack the saves and guarantee themselves that they can deliver 3000 points to almost any gamer with almost no effort at all.

So rather than this being a gamer with questionable taste, it's a company with business sense with a whole bunch of customers with questionable taste.

Simple.

yeah right, its nothing but some stupid ebayers bidding up on it and not going to pay, I get it all the time, non paying bidders. They just love to bid on $hit to show their friends, ain't like they're really going to pay. I can almost guarantee he ain't gonna get paid when the auctions ends. damn non paying bidders!!

yes its the same picture, but that does not mean its the same action, or same product. it is the same person selling 2 hdd's with different gamer-tag's. one is selling for a *****load more because it is the #1 ranked gamer-tag. he just used the same pic twice.

 » nobody iwll actually pay

people put huge bids for "famous" items on ebay and will never pay it, it happens all the time, they just use new accounts and ebay doesnt' really do anything about it.

6 grand for a username with points, you can buy a car for that price. A car people, not an Xbox Live account. A CAR!

 » Aha!

The $6k bid was removed earlier today, and it dropped to $5200. Now EBay has removed the auction altogether. I wonder how many offers he'll get via IM now?

Please don't bother to make ANOTHER article about this crap, QJ. Nobody really cares.
