Sony PlayStation 3 - Image 1

We've gotten reports that the new PS3 firmware released yesterday - firmware 2.50, to be exact - has been confirmed to block all BD-J homebrew made for the console.

Definitely bad news for those who usually run BD-J homebrew on their PS3s, but it's not really so surprising as Sony was bound to do something like this sooner or later. Hopefully more progress will be made in the future to keep homebrew alive on the new firmware.

We'll bring you more updates on the state of homebrew on the PS3 as soon as they come, so keep checking back here on the QJ.NET PS3 blog.

 » hmm

Never used the BD-J stuff, but bummer nonetheless.

   Re: hush404 - 2008-10-16
 » I'm actually glad!

That exploit was garbage! It wasn't going anywhere and was limited to the point that all of the "homebrew" released under it combined totaled nothing more than crap.

Atleast now we'll have a QJ.net page that isn't spammed by "random tetris clone 80" and people can really go forward and find a real way to use the power of the system for homebrew.

 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

I disagree. Aside from sound, there was no limits. Java can produce some really kewl stuff. It needed time. All homebrew starts out that way.

 » mmm

***** me
i actually agree with ISOHAVEN

although ISOHAVEN you have it terribly wrong

bluetooth blocked
full controls blocked
usb blocked
hdd access blocked

theres a good bit more (some might be possible but i doubt it ie usb),

however its not so limiting that you cant make a decent game, however the controls is by the most pain in the ass thing and is probably why no stunning games have came out

apart from that it was all good, also the fact you could only launch one was ***** a JAR launcher needed to be created

   Re: ISOHaven - 2008-10-16
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

You are such a moron.

bluetooth - NOT NEEDED
full controls - What controls? WTF are you talking about?
USB - NOT NEEDED
HDD access - NOT NEEDED

The HDD is the memory stick you dolt.

You have to keep your opinions within SCOPE of the actual product. BD JAVA.

Get a clue will you?

   Re: ISOHaven - 2008-10-16
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

What's weak is using the, "dup account" nonsense excuse.

"you're clearly just Justin logged in from another account"

It's because of these atitudes, that they deserve to see their consoles hacked.

   Re: Techni - 2008-10-15
 » Nah.

You can still run java in Linux. And much more more. Stick with Linux.

Does not.

 » lol

big deal... nothing useful ever actually came out of this bd-j thing, and if you want to run java programs, do as techni says and use linux. that's why sony put that in there, so people wouldt have to mess with the original OS

 » spicyhamster

I agree with you. That is good that Sony gave us the ability already for homebrew via linux. Using linux gives you more flexibility anyway.
   by jomacho0 - 2008-10-15
 » ???

What flexibility? With all that hardware access blocked, it is as fun as running linux on an intel 286.

   by cizzar - 2008-10-15
 » Oh no !

What will the millions of people who downloaded all the BD-J homebrew now play ? They can just throw away their PS3 and their HDTVs ...

Shatterdome, I'm pretty sure they were being sarcastic, you just ruined it man :P

Good, cause this shouldn't be news anyways :P
   by ackeejag - 2008-10-16
 » good

homebrews on the ps3 was just one more step towards the psp. besides you dont need *****ty devs to get *****ty games on your ps3 now that it supports flash 9. just go on newgrounds and play some crappy games (need to plug a mouse and keyboard into your ps3.)

   by c74gta4smash - 2008-10-16
 » *Sigh*

I was gonna ask about this on yeterdays story on the 2.50 release. But seeing as so many people feel that BD-java was lame, I migjht have gotten flamed.

Well, there's always Linux :)

And there's always the hammer-and-nail-then-drop-from-twelve-story-building option...
