Homebrew games sporting physics engines seem to be the "in" thing nowadays, and we're certainly not complaining; with games like Drawing Box and Pocket Physics, we've seen how much fun we can glean from just seeing our objects tumble down on top of each other. What happens, however, if you take a well-loved franchise - Tetris, perhaps - and add a sliver of physics in it? What we get is the AntiTetris, by homebrew developer Mia.

No, despite its name the AntiTetris does not spew out anti-matter every time the line is cleared. It's actually based on the classic Tetris for the Game Boy handheld, powered with the Chipmunk physics engine. It's still a straightforward game of dropping blocks, but with a strange twist: your blocks won't go to the spot where you want them to, at least, not easily.

Here's the gameplay and control fact sheet for the AntiTetris:

Gameplay
  • The behavior of the tetrominoes is based on a physics engine: they move, rotate and interact with each other like real physical objects.
  • You can slow down the fall of the pieces at will.
  • The aim of the game is not to make lines (don't bother trying, it's impossible), but instead, to stack up as many tetrominoes as possible before they reach the top of the screen.
Buttons
  • You can move and rotate faster by pressing the corresponding button several times.
  • ◄ / ►: Move left / right
  • ▼ / ▲: Accelerate / slow down the fall of the tetrominoes
  • X / O: Rotate
  • START: Pause
  • SELECT: Quit
You can grab the eboot file from the download link below. The zip file does not include a readme file; make sure you're familiar with installing homebrew on the PSP. In the meantime, check out the video below to see the AntiTetris in action:

 » this game = win

alternative scoring =
try to end the level using as few blocks as possible. pretty darn fun. my score is 8 so far (got lucky too).

also fun =
you - hand psp to friend with bored look on his face and say "here, play tetris"
bored and-or stoned friend emits one or more of a variety of amusing responses.

id like to see more homebrew based on this physics engine, it makes me happy :). . . you could probably use it for any number of things. . . pool. . . curling. . .SimMess. . .

 » This is cool

Needs highscores really, my highest that I can remember is 30. It's still an insanely cool game, though.

I need to let somebody play this that likes tetris but without telling them how to play. They'd be like "what the hell?"

haha fun stuff. yeah this really needs a high score and more game modes (ie. use least amount of brick before dying)?

 » lol beat this

i got 3 by getting two L pieces and i rotated one and it bounced off ground then other L hit it while rotating bouncing off that L making it go near top where another piece just hit it and it was game over.
