Manhunt 2 - Image 1 It's been quite the eventful week for Manhunt 2, isn't it? With its recent banning in the UK, being buffeted by parent watchdog groups, and having just been shunned by the two companies whose consoles it's coming out on - the title's not even released yet, and it's taking a colossal beating any other game would have shattered underneath. This begs the question: what's going to happen now?

Besides starting up a time machine to see what's going to happen come the game's promised July 10 release, we have the next best thing - a group of analysts' take on what sort of action Take-Two would probably do to be able to release Manhunt 2 without any more troubles.

But before that, let's go over Take-Two's options. The first is toning down the game a notch - which means cutting out or censoring content, to get it from being rated as Adults Only (AO) down to Mature (M). Second is appealing to the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) to re-rate the game themselves, with the title presented as is. The third is simply taking it all in stride, and release Manhunt 2 into the public, unedited and complete with its AO rating.

Now that we're up to speed, what do the analysts think Take-Two would do? Enter the first analyst, Nollenberger Capital Partner's Todd Greenwald. He says that he expects Take-Two to pick the first choice - that is, to do whatever it takes to get an M rating instead of an AO. Citing the Hot Coffee incident with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas as the basis for his assumption, he expects the publishing firm to do the same with Manhunt 2. He also says that the sales of an M-rated Manhunt 2 would probably make up for the UK ban, but an AO-rated one wouldn't.

Lazard Capital Markets' Colin Sebastian shares Todd Greenwald's sentiments, in that Take-Two would indeed make the choice of cutting stuff out in favor of an M rating. However, Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter believes otherwise, saying that Take-Two would most likely ship the game as it is, AO rating and all.

He cites two reasons for this. First, editing the content for an M rating would certainly mean Take-Two spending more money than they've already spent in developing this game, and also disappointing fans with a delayed (and watered-down) title. The other reason is that with Take-Two not doing so well in the financial aspect of things, and having already made some belt-tightening measures, investing more money in the game is a step backwards.

Well, whatever Take-Two's decision is going to be, the world's certainly waiting for it. More updates about Manhunt 2 as we get them. How about you readers, though? What do you think will be Take-Two's final answer? Let us know by your comments.

Unfortunately neither Sony of Nintendo actually allow AO conent on thier consoles from a gaming point of view.

Unless something is done to tone down the game, it simply won't be released though either Sony or Ninendo at it's current rating level, and there is nothing anyone can do to change S or N's minds up on this matter.

 » My letter to Rockstar:

Earlier today, I submitted this to rockstar's contact page at mouthoff@rockstargames.com:

I wish I had the time to write all this out on paper, in hopes that someone would actually read it on paper, as opposed to it being lost in transit through the onslaught of emails that must come in from every other person in the remainder of the world for the ever so rare "GTA3 rox, lololol".

In any case, I want to speak up, before it's too late. And, although I anticipate the opposite happening, and I can't say I won't be dissapointed, please deliver Manhunt 2 the way it was intended to be.

Please.

Don't censor your view, your artist's views, and your programmer's steadfast dedication to deliver another quality product. Please.

I hadn't preordered the game, because I wasn't overly impressed with the first one, it just didn't seem my forté, and I didn't really have any interested in getting Manhunt 2 either. But keeping up with qj.net, I started reading about how it was banned from British sales, and now Irish, and now Adults Only rating from ESRB, (whoever the hell it was that appointed them anyway) and that Nintendo and Sony not wanting to support it, I know that must leave an enormously difficult decision ahead of you.

And.... well... for whatever value this one supporter's opinion for your cause has,
I ask you, for artists everywhere that have had to stay quiet, or hide their work from the masses.

Don't censor yourselves.

Freedom of expression should never be censored.
Artism should never be censored.

Least of all, from this, our bastardized medium that is seldom recognized as an artform.

-John.

Too bad sony and nintendo decide to put down on developers freedom of expression by putting out some policy of no AO rated games allowed on their console.... Why have an AO rating if it cant be used? Might as well just call it a BAN rating. Sony and Nintendo are just hurting them selves. This also could have been a good opportunity for Xbox to get the game if they wud accept it but they too also said they have this No AO rating policy. Game industry will never move forward with this kind of censorship.

Whats with all you sicko ***** t a r d s that want to play a interactive snuff film , and so badly you are crying like children because someone with some common sense ( not mr CS because hes a stupid ***** ) says Hey this game goes too far its too graphic its too violent.

You pricks screaming about censorship have to understand that kids are going to get a hold of a game anyway they can and to protect impressionable young minds or to prevent FURTHER desensatization of population someone HAS TO DRAW A LINE SOMEWHERE.

This is that line

This is no different than movies like Saw and Hannibal. Yet those are critically acclaimed and don't receive any censorship whatsoever. In terms of actual content, those are far worse than either of the manhunt games can ever be. Say what you want, but it's entertainment. Just because it's playable doesn't make it any different than the aforementioned movies.

You say that we need to ban it because kids can get a hold of it. Well, the same goes for Saw and Hostel. Kids can waltz into a store and buy those movies much the same way they can for the game. You talk of desensitizing... you're desensitizing people by telling them what they can and can't do. Giving people the choice to play a game is not desensitizing. Learn what a term means before you use it.

All people need to do to keeps kids' hands off it is make the kids' dead beat parents set rules for what games and movies the kids can watch. just because some *****wad lets their six year old child buy the game doesn't mean everyone will.

But if you insist that it's being marketed where kids can get at it, how about this: hide it in the back room of game stores and people can only get it if they specifically ask the store clerk for it and show ample identification. That would seem to work now wouldn't it?

I don't understand what the big deal is. Maybe I just haven't seen the graphic stuff in this game, but I have a hard time imagining it being any more shocking than the original mortal kombat was.

Sure, pulling someone's spine out seems cartoonishly absurd now, but in 1992 it was appalling. People complained and congress talked about it and stuff, but it never got an all out ban.

No line is to be drawn. Ever. Not in America. It's just a video game. Stupid parents need to be responsible for their retarded kids.
For someone with such a foul mouth you should be standing behind a stance against censorship.

 » Appeal

To my understanding, Sony and Nintendo are against the AO rating. But are they against it to the point where they would prevent it's release? If the developpers kept the game as it is, would they allow the game to come out with AO? I think that they should let it come out and set the path for future AO rated games. If Sony and Nintendo really want to ban it, Rockstar should at least try to appeal to them.

I know there are twisted freaks out there, but there aren't that many, we should censor everyone because of that. They should let the game be released and be ready to loose money. It should be a statement, to show they aren't afraid of censorship.

thats my two cents

I say release the mature version first, then release a special edition, uncensored AO title. If the game turns out to be a success, the consoles would probably change their stance on allowing the AO rating to run on their system. The alternative is them losing money and I think we all know how corporations feel about that.

I find it kind of weird how they have censorship of speech in so many countries like the uk and apperently the U.S by not allowing the game to be sold there (who makes these decisions) but these countries dont put the effort into putting roman polanski in prison despite him raping little girls and being a fugitive for like 30 yrs, and depsite of how easy he is to reach in France or Poland, and allow polanski to keep making movies because its "freedom of speech". Apperently those countries dont find it disturbing that a child rapist is making movies and distributng them there, and even allow holywood to give him academy awards, but find a violoent game bannable.

 » AO rating...

If Rockstar knows that Manhunt will get an AO rating, then they might as well add even more violence. Since they are getting an AO rating then they should utilize to its maximum extent. That would piss off all the idiots opposing this game.
