PS3 stock: buy me - Image 1Despite the brave front that Sony is putting up, analysts from the industry are seeing right through it, saying that the gaming giant does have something to be worried about with their flag-bearer, the PS3.

It's been a year since the PS3 launched, and we've all been witnesses to company spokespersons and execs claiming that this year (and that year) will be "PS3's year".

But unfortunately, analysts are saying this obviously hasn't happened yet. The PS3 is still lagging behind the consoles race, and they can't say that's because they launched late in the game - the Wii debuted about two weeks after the PS3 and we see it surging way ahead of everyone else.

No, age definitely isn't factor. Pricing apparently is. Microsoft's price cuts on the Xbox 360 clearly boosted their sales numbers, while the PS3 remains stubborn at its current price, saying that they're not giving a slash-off cos the money's all worth it anyway - technology and all that she-bang.

David Cole of DFC for one believes that Sony should start worrying, if not already. In an interview with GameDaily, he said:

Yes, Sony should be worried. I think of bigger concern is Europe. I haven't seen the numbers yet, but from most sources I hear the Xbox 360 is doing much better this holiday on the continent and that could be a big issue. As we said, the Xbox 360 looked surprisingly strong this holiday with 1) price; 2) solid lineup, especially when compared with competition, and 3) a retooled online service with new features like Netflix.

Not to say that I love the Xbox 360 more than the PS3, but I'd have to agree with him. Sony's insistence on retaining the current price of their units, no matter how "worth it" they may say it's gonna be for the consumers, is still a tad too pricey especially in the current state of economic affairs. Counting in the HDTV and other paraphernalia needed to fully enjoy the PS3 experience, folks are easily gonna ring up US$ 1, 000. Games aren't even included yet.

Speaking of which, the PS3 had been touting "big" titles this year. True, LittleBigPlanet and Resistance 2 are huge, but fact of the matter is, it's not selling as well as it should given its hype. LBP, despite the adorable Sackboys, only broke eighth on the top ten on its first month out. The following month, it dropped altogether from the top 20 list.

Microsoft on the other hand, has a steady barrage of titles that would keep gamers busy. And MS being more aggressive with getting exclusive content isn't making it any easier for Sony either.

And David Cole is not the only one showing concern for Sony. Says Jesse Divnich of the EEDAR:

According to the NPD figures, the PS3 was down 19% compared to last November. The PS3 sales definitely represent an unfavorable scenario for Sony. With both the PS3 and the PSP being the highest priced platforms in their segment, it is no surprise that both were the only next-gen platforms to post a year-over-year decline...The economy probably played the biggest role in hindering sales, since as consumers, we tend to be more price sensitive when facing economic uncertainty. This is when, typically, differentiating features such as the PS3's Blu-ray capability, tend to carry less weight in the consumer decision process. Consumers just want to play games right now; they are not really concerned about owning a high-end console, or a system with all the bells and whistles, which is why the strip-down Xbox 360 Arcade version has done so well.

And finally, Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan had this to say on the matter:

I think Sony is a greater victim of the recession, more because they are a consumer electronics company than a video game company; people aren't buying HDTVs and that's why Best Buy has been talking about their same store sales being down 5-15%... Secondly, you can't buy a PS3 for less than $399, and the average of all Xbox 360 SKUs in November was $270. The other factor is that the Wii is ridiculously cheaper. So Sony has all these things working against it, and then at the end of the day, their game lineup, which is very good, is still not sufficiently differentiated to induce people to say "I've just got to buy a PS3."

Well, the consensus obviously is that Sony needs to take a step back from the "It's the best and it deserves to be priced so" stand with the PS3. As Divnich said, "Being the best isn't always a good thing, especially when people can't afford it." So, Sony? The ball's in your court. Obviously it's only you who can turn this thing around for you.

IMO the only one who should be worried is Microsoft.

The only reason the Xbox 360 is still alive is the price of the PS3. If the price would go down to 299 or 199 bucks, you can
can say goodbye to Xbox 360.
Just my opinion, though.

and like pap said, parents look at the price tag. but if those same parents knew about all the BS that is M$ and its RROD u would think they would get the better machine (PS3). the 360 will never be better than the ps3. all they can do is put up better numbers which is good i guess, if u want a peice of ***** machine. i spent $650 on my ps3 at launch w/ a 2nd controller and spent $1800 on a new hdtv a few months b4 that and u know what neither of those have gave me trouble. while in the same period of time many 360 users xbox would have fallen to the rrod. and to respond to the stripping down of the ps3. sure they could do that n sell more units but they have done a bibt of stripping down so far. only 2 usb ports i dont think they have the memory card readers anymore. the diff. graphics chip or w/e it is. i got the original 60GB PS3 and is still the best they ever put out.

Sony should strip the PS3 of everything and sell it for a way cheaper price. People are actually dumb enough to buy an arcade 360 so Sony should do the same M$ did. Parents that buy 360 for their kids don't look for anything but the price tags.

   Re: Shatterdome - 2008-12-13
 » Well...

Sony has pretty much stripped everything they can from the PS3.....it needs the HDD and Wi-Fi for basic functionality (installing games and linking to the PSP)...So they really can't remove more....

And yes parents will be quite happy when a few months down the road little timmy is asking for a $120 harddrive, and $60 so he can play with his friends on-line, and another $100 so he doesn't have to worry about the dog chewing through his ethernet cord...

Math time, 199 + 120 + 100 + 60 + $479

2008 was supposed to be the year of the PS3, well it wasn't. Should Sony be worried, yes. Is the platform doomed, no.

well of course the xcrap will sell more it appeals to all those who can download games and play them on a modded system, the same with the Wii...i mean come on if that were the case with the PS3 then i'm sure you would see things change and it would be the PS3 at the top of the charts, i think sony should just strip down there system to the bare bones and sell it for 199.99 and then make a firmware were you could play crap box 360 games and wii games.....heck why not then you would sell more and eliminate the competition, but even if they don't i still have my backwards compatible 80gigger and i can honestly say i have had no problems with from the get GO.

 » Funny how things work

Sony did the same mistake Microsoft did with the original Xbox...

Remember when the Xbox came out, and it had all these features, but people still preferred the inferior PS2 because it had better games...

Microsoft learned the lesson, Sony apparently did not.

That doesn't matter to me though, I love my PS3.

   Re: Shatterdome - 2008-12-13
 » Xbox...

Is a totally different situation than the one PS3 is in now.

The reason Xbox didn't take off so well was that it was Microsoft's first console ever....

Especially around that time people's views on MS were not very good, they were hated even more than they are today, not to mention "MS making a console? WTF? Don't they make software"

You can also look at Xbox and realise that sales don't mean crap. It is not like Xbox died, it's not like PS3 is going to die...xbox was the technically superior system and as such the people that bought the system were treated to much technically better exclusives then PS2 had at the time.

People are all doom and gloom about PS3 not selling well, so what, it's not going to be phased out, it will be around for a long time and people that invested in it are going to get the technically better games, period.

Not to mention in a year or two from now, once the reccesion is over and Sony can reduce prices, they will start catching up...

 » Emm, sorry but no

I'm sure the average gamer DOES NOT say: "Hmm, this is Microsoft's first console ever. Maybe I should go with a manufacturer with more experience. Also, I think Microsoft is evil."

No.

The average gamer doesn't research. They are likely to think this: "This console is cheaper, AND it has the games I like, I guess I'll get this one."

 » hmm

I actually have heard a lot of good points. I like what RommelTJ comment with the xbox and the ps2. The ps3 just needs to lower their price tag it's just way to much I payed 600 dollars and of course have had no problems with it but I don't remember when the last timed I played a game on it. Don't get my wrong I love my ps3 but right now i use it to watch my dvd movies before I go to bed. sure I would love to play cod 4 or 5 on ps3 but all my friends own a 360

   by ISOHaven - 2008-12-13
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

Sony should be worried. The 360 is quickly catching up to the Wii. Well, even if it does or passes the Wii that wont really mean much if you average sales per year. Anyway, of all the catching up the PS3 did, they just lost it ALL and more.

Sony needs to become competitive.

   by HDRasta - 2008-12-18
» Sony needs to become competitive?

please PS3 has a way high quality then crapbox. you pay for what you get for a PS3 and then some cuz you dont have to pay to play online. in the long run you pay more for crapbox cuz many of the components are xbox spasific and made yo cost more.

   by Bob-Loblaw - 2008-12-27
» Sony does need to be competitive....

M$ is either incredibly smart, or Xbox users are incredibly dense. Some Simple math on something I haven't seen anybody touch on yet;

M$ has sold over 25 Million XBox 360 units since launch. Lets say only about half of those users pay for online access. That's 12.5M x $49.99, or over $624 MILLION a year that M$ is raking in for doing basically nothing it isn't already doing.

Sony needed to let go the tight security system and then the consumer will buy the system no matter how expensive the price tag will be.
Plain and Simple

   Re: Cydonos - 2008-12-31
 » I agree 100%

the Wii's security system is crap, and they're the winning console. Sony needs to make it easier for game developers to come to the ps3. Job #1: Embrace homebrew.
   by marich06 - 2008-12-31
 » no worries..

yeah sure the ps3 is gettin the short end of the stick as far as sales go but it doesnt change the fact that the ps3 is still number one amongs all 3 consoles in terns of absolutely everything the ps3 has to offfer ( graphics-wise, wireless, blueray etc) and as stated several times before in some form or another sony needs a new strategy but the fact of the matter is that the ps3, is infact, worth every penny spent on it... even the ones without backwards compatibility which btw i happe to nown and i havent had a single problem with it at all but lets be honest tho people if u spent 400-500 on a system wouldnt u go a little out the way to make sure nothin happens to that system?^^. kudos to sony for teaching us all to value the good things in life and good luck to them. i'll be riding this one out to the very end and i hope their on top when its all said and done cus they do infact deserve it.
