We don't know if you've encountered an error on your Playstation 3 units lately but it seems that one is occurring rather more commonly these past few days. The issue in question is simply known as "Error 80010514". According to some, this error will first appear during the first months of the unit. Sony's customer support explained that the error is not common so a simple reset of the PlayStation 3 system will do the trick. While that made the unit to work again, it seems that the console is still prone to the same error. According to our source, this problem might have been brought about by any of the following:

» Thats Strange
Playstation.com says it is a disc read error.

you dont have to send your unit for repair.
unlike some other console that when it flashes 3 lights then its 1 month of no gaming.
as long as the ps3 doesnt develop a dreaded malfunction like those 3 lights, for me ps3 is the best console to date.

My 60GB model has worked flawlessly since the day that I brought it home.
I work my PS3 hard with a combination of movies, games, and protein folding simulations. I almost never turn it off because it folds protein when not viewing a movie or gaming.
To me it seems that Sony really engineered the PS3 extremely well and that most of these problems are not going to be hardware related.
From what I have read about this problem I will definitely not take the cheap route on the HDD upgrade that I plan to make in the near future. I would not suggest that anyone else does either.

same here.
Never had any problems with both of our PS3s.
My Father has a 60GB and I have a 40 GB. (too bad my father has the 60gig one, but I just don't had the money for the 60gig... *sigh*)

I was playing NFS Pro street, approx 4 hrs after the 2.20 update and got this error. I could put in a Game and play like one match or less than 10 minutes, and it would start acting up. I had to send my PS3 to Sony, and it is currently back-logged waiting to be repaired since April 4th, 08.

The only problem I've ever had with my PS3 is one time the screen was totally blank on startup. I tried composite and the usual HDMI connection and still nothing. It worked fine after I held the power button for 5 seconds to reset the factory settings.
It really freaked me out, but now works great and hasn't done that since.

I've had this error a few times, but nothing serious.
it's rare so it does'nt bother me at all.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!
That error has been known for a while. I like how the media plays it out to be a new serious problem.
Based on forum statistics alone, those who get this error do not get it again on average or rather for the most part. Just a hiccup.

I haven't had much issues with my 60gig PS3 either. It seems to keep going and going fine. I do wish there was a defrag mode because I seem to download and delete items almost daily and most likely I have multiple files in pieces thoughout the hard drive.
