Video game addiction - Image 1Gamers need not worry about their favorite video games becoming crime and misbehavior scapegoats... for now. Doctors specializing in addiction and mental disorders attest that video games do not necessarily cause any form of addiction, saying that more research is needed before making such an assumption.

"Working with this problem is no different than working with alcoholic patients. The same denial, the same rationalization, the same inability to give it up," Dr. Thomas Allen of the Osler Medical Center commented about formally recognizing video games as a possible cause of addiction. Listing video games as one possible cause of acute addiction would pave the way for insurance against video game addiction.

But addiction experts beg to differ. "There is nothing here to suggest that this is a complex physiological disease state akin to alcoholism or other substance abuse disorders," said Dr. Stuart Glow, echoing the statements of other doctors who didn't share the American Medical Association's (AMA) sentiments regarding video games being the cause of mental illness. Psychiatrists also add that it wasn't clear whether video games are addictive. "It's not necessarily a cause-and-effect type issue. There may be certain kids who have a compulsive component to what they are doing," said Dr. Louis Kraus of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

It is interesting to note that that committee who made the proposal eventually backed away from its position, instead asking the American Psychiatric Association to consider adding "video game addiction" to the next edition of its diagnostic manual, "American Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Disorders", due to be published in 2012.

Games aren't an addiction?
Has this "expert" ever seen those WOW addicts videos on YouTube?

» There are odd people everywhere.

Last time I checked I didn't get dry heaves and sweats from not playing a video game - and neither does anyone I know.

When gamers start holding up liquor stores for their next fix of WoW then call me out.

 » THIS IS *****ING RETARTED!

The level of addiction that is encountered through videogames is akin to any other enjoyable exercise. If this is listed as an addiction, then masturbation, playing of music, watching television and movies, and playing sport too much is an addiction as well. ***** these retards. ***** the addiction bull*****. Someone needs to tell these idiots that they are looking too deep into something that isnt really there.

Damn doctors, always have to try and say something smart for the parents. You ever thought about the fact that it's only the young children, ages 6-12 who are the ones most likley to be addicted to games, because they usually have an easy grasp to it?

I wouldn't even call it being "addicted". That's just the first word that pops into those money-greeving, so-called 'doctor's, heads when you see someone that just like video-games period.

Uggh you stupid doctors with your idiotic little theory's. GTFO

 » DSM Here we come

Trust me... it'll be in the DSM come 2012... the AMA is going to add video game addiction, even though studies say its not true it'll be on the basis that Psychologist will be able to use video game addiction as a diagnosis, and thus they will have one more diagnosis [to lable people with] which means, more potential clients. Just like all children have ADHD.... ADHD isn't a diagnosis it's a label, a label that gives psychologist the ability to exatact money for treatment. In the end its all about money, the video game industry is a billion dollar industry, and other industries are going to want a part of that.

ADHD is the label given to kids when they are unable to stand still in school on a summer day. Well.. the reason behind this is probably with an addiction comes medicine.. and the pharmaceuticals get happy if 100,000s get diagnosed with something.

 » Fish are addictive?

I spend a lot of free time playing videogames, reading videogame magazines, or surfing the web for game related information. My Mother, spends many hours of her time, pouring her efforts over a number of fishtanks in the basement, reading about fish, or even surfing the web for fish related material.

It's called a *****ing hobby. You have be damn stupid to confuse a hobby that someone enjoys, with a horrible addiction like drinking or drugs. Does Tony Hawk need to go to a support group to get him off of his skateboarding binge? I hope not.

Jackasses.

 » Not an adiction

Its not an addiction, addictions is like wanting to quit but not being able to from chemical withdrawls, if you want to stop playing video games you stop, not like you find yourself playing WoW and think "how the ***** did I end up here?!". Get over it people.

» Books are just as addictive...

Gaming is as addictive as reading books. Playing the latest action game is no more constructive or destructive than reading the latest Tom Clancy novel or Harry Potter novel. Some games are gruesome but some books and films are also gruesome. You wouldnt sell a movie like Saw to a minor just like you wouldnt sell a game like 'Manhunt2' to a minor. Just get the Ratings' sorted out and let us choose to play what we want or what we are elegable to play....or try to ban books and movies too!

 » Not addiction but escapism

Computer games are not an addiction because there is no biochemical component. However, played to an extreme they can be used for escapism.

Games can be considered an addiction, due to their release of endorphins in the brain (***** that makes you feel good,) but unlike drugs, the level isn't very high and isn't habit-forming.

The release of endorphins does not equal addiction.

GTFO----->
