Acclaim - Image 1Acclaim boss David Perry seems to be making a habit out of bold claims lately. Last month at E3, he claimed that the event was broken, expensive, and an embarrassment to the industry.

From what we've seen of the event, his words struck home. His latest claim feels a bit premature for me, but what do you guys think? Perry says that Sony has no chance of profiting from the PlayStation 3, and that they'll never achieve the same success that they got from the PS2:

Because of the cost of making the PlayStation 3 and because they sold it at a loss, Sony basically has pretty much no chance of making money on the PS3, because it's lost more money than they made during the entire peak of the PlayStation 2. It's not going to happen again for Sony

Quite a bold thing to say, considering that the PlayStation 3 has been increasing in sales lately, and that the Leipzig Games Convention is still ongoing and Sony may still have a couple of surprises.

This coming from the ACCLAIM boss

Aka, the boss of the company that makes HORRIBLE games, someone find me a good game by acclaim.

You can't? Yeah.

 » Haha

I don't even like it, but I think Turok counts as a good one.

Other than that one, there is nothing.

dude, turok sucked big time.

   Re: Uhyve - 2008-08-21
» Perfect man for the job.

Coming from acclaim, the experts of not making money. Sony may have to take heed on this one...

   Re: Xis - 2008-08-21
 » wow

I used to like acclame back in the 16 bit era but 3 Gens later they file for bankruptcy right befor they relaesed Jueced and is criticizing a company supporting 3 great selling platforms and the fact that its first party games sel through the roof and Blu ray is only getting better and a 10 year plan for the PS3 while it out sells 360 week after week (besides 2 and 3 weeks ago) yea this guys totaly right Sony stop shutting it down and make this guy correct he need the publicity

   Re: anhero - 2008-08-21
 » well

from a point of perspecive, sony's losses for the PS3 can't be recovered via software sales and their distribution, ect. becuz the losses are high. But if Sony did this move they did it becuz of a reason, and I bet they wouldn't risk investing so much money. What was th investment? Blu-ray video format. Sony can lose the console war, they can even stop supporting their consoleafter a few years, but the fact is that Sony achieved hat it wanted already becuz almost everyone knows the movie film market is bigger and more profitable than the video game market, and Sony is a top company in movie films, and it will also be profitable that other companies have to use their movie software.

I know it's a shame that many people have feel deceived by th ps3 thing it was gonna be the ideal video game console and the best and all for games like the ps2, but if you did your research it was clear after a few months of its release that the ps3's purpose was win over th movie film market and the fact that the ps3 will become the standard universal blu-ray player and will improve its online movie distribution service just shows the potential it has.

If you were to ask me who is gonna benefit more in the long run it will most undoubtedly be sony (and I think piracy wont be threat considering the immense size they take and the time it takes to download).

I agree with that.

 » It doesnt matter

It's completely plausible that he's right. It doesnt matter though. The PS3 is a vessel through which Sony has brought to market not only a viable long-term HD disc medium in Blu-Ray, but also a radical new processor in the CELL.

As long Sony continues to use the CELL in future consoles as well as other devices and continues to support the growth and standardization of CELL programming they put themselves in a good position to compete with Intel. They've already won the HD disc medium.

Whether it pays off for Sony is yet to be seen, but the fact is if the PS3 breaks even, that's a major victory. That amounts to launching 2 new cutting-edge technologies to market for nothing. It only costs them time.

is kinda right, since Sony has already lost $3 billion due to the PS3's *****ty release and its first year. we're talking about BILLIONS here. and yes, they are still recovering from that loss, but because of advertisements, etc., they are also still taking out money to do these stuff.

but i dunno, i mean, the ps3 is indeed selling tons of units now in Japan and North America (no doubt about Japan), so we may never know. and besides, the PS3's offers more room for developers to play i.e. mgs4 or final fantasy versus 13 which are only possible on ps3. heck, even gta 4 lags on the 360 when blowing up tons of cars at the same time, but not on the ps3.

@Keith, well, IBM both made the Falcon chip for 360 and the Cell processor for the PS3. (Cell is made by Sony, Toshiba, and IBM)

   Re: theaceoffire - 2008-08-21
 » Not to mention

Not to mention that the PS3 lets people buy stuff and download it (almost NO distribution cost, pure profit) and rent videos (Sell ad space to ad guys, sell videos to us, and no distribution cost).

They probably get more money from us buying a $1.99 playstation eye demo than they got from many ps2 crapfest games.

   Re: Xis - 2008-08-21
 » not to mention 360

why is it this dude hasnt said anything on the fact that MS has suffered the loss of 1.8 billion on RROD warrenties and BIllions on lawsuits regarding it not to mention the fact that MS has NEVER made a profit dollar on the Xbox brand name to date. WOW PS3 out sells 360 in its own native country all the time why wouldnt 8.5 more years lead to a profit for PS3?
   by NarooN - 2008-08-21
 » yeah.

Totally, it's only been out for 2 years, and with it's 10 year life cycle, it's super obvious that everyone is a psychic and can see what will happen in the upcoming 8 years. I mean, PS3 has already failed and will continue to do so, right?

That last sentence was just as ridiculous and this guy's claim.

   Re: NarooN - 2008-08-21

Mortal Kombat was done by Midway. The whole series was. Acclaim had nothing to do with it.

They did NBA Jam which was awesome back then, can't think of anything recent though lol

Acclaim did handle the console port of MK2. That was a long time ago though.

maybe Sony have lost $$ from the day the PS3 was released upto now.. but that doesnt generally mean they will too in the near future.. but that was just a prediction of a person, maybe based from the records he has, the only thing is it looks like it became his habit to tell his predictions and/or comments to the public just because he somehow predicted E3.. haha.. makes me wanna post my predictions too..

well i predict... all PS3 users will hate him and bash him.. LOL.. i wanna know if my prediction would come true... lol...

Hmmmm, surely this David Perry must have a relationship to Wildtangent's CEO a.k.a Mr. Sense with this terrible statement. PS3 is starting to pick up well and I believe it's the Blu-ray player of choice for consumers. However, I still think it will never catch Nintendo.

Victory is mine!

Wow

   by Sanzee - 2008-08-22
 » Hmm

Maybe PS3 will get its money back with the Blu-Ray player popularity which will probably be coming soon. But who knows? I'm a 360 fan but I'm not going to deny a good console when I see one. Maybe the PS3 will make money, maybe it won't? But only time will tell. Good luck sony fans. For real.

   by scarface_tha_second - 2008-08-23
 » Yeh

That's why Acclaim makes mediocre games and Sony makes killer consoles. Pretty soon Bill Gates is going to feel as if he has what it takes to make a console...

Wait...
