Unlocking the hottest phone in the market, the iPhone, seems to be highest goal attainable right now. The dream is not without its pitfalls however. iphoneunlocking.com of UniquePhones, was about to release its remote software unlocking services today when it received a phone call from the law firm representing AT&T. It promptly halted the release in consideration of the development.

The law firm informed UniquePhones of the legal boundaries the software would be breaching if it is released. Issues such as copyright infringement and illegal software dissemination were discussed. UniquePhones is now getting its own legal advice and considering whether this is a warning from AT&T or a direct threat for legal action.

For now they are also considering how the law will apply to the obvious problem of a worldwide release. They are also discussing what to do with the software if it is legally banned since it won't be long before their version will be obsolete in relation to future releases from other developers. As it stands however, UniquePhones will hold off the release until further notice.

 » So what

any consumer product will be tampered with. If I buy a dvd I want it to play on all brands of dvd player.
If I buy an iphone but do not live in USA i still have a great product
that I can use as a communication device via internet etc.
If I am capable of finding a way to utilise the iphone as a phone and connect to a local provider of my choosing thats my freedom of choice and my right as owner of the product. I cannot imagine Ford saying that I am not allowed to customize my car. AT&T have payed for the rights to an exclusive deal with Apple. No problem but they did not purchase the exclusive right to say what I can or can not do with my iphone. Apple by law must allow the phone to be unlockable as you cannot by law be bound to the same provider for eternity.
That others found a way to trigger the unlock process is not illegal. Maybe if they sell there process to third parties AT&T have an argument as they can sue for loss of projected income as a direct result of someone else earning monies by selling this process. However if this process is dumped on the internet for free AT&T cannot sue the rest of the world. Many clients are happy with AT&T and many would be owners of an iphone have no access to an AT&T service. So AT&T in my opinion should concentrate on services to clients that are exclusive and not available from their competitors rather than waste money trying to stop the inevitable. AT&T cannot and will never be the sole provider for iphone on a global scale. its impossible. AT&T should concentrate on proving what they do better with an iphone and promote what services they can offer with an iphone that the consumer will miss if they unlock and use an alternative provider.
APPLE, great product.
AT&T, get real, you cannot stop the internet so be a better provider and ensure that your clients stay rather than leave.
