Science news - Last-Ditch Resort: Move Polar Bears to Antarctica? - Image 1

Global warming is threatening to melt off all the ice in the North Pole come Summer, which further endangers (the already endangered) polar bears. The solution? Scientists are now actually considering shipping some of them off to the other pole, Antarctica.

Good idea? Not really. Humans have tried doing this sort of thing before - uprooting one species from its natural habitat and placing it in a foreign one - and most of them have ended up in disaster. This one may not be the exception.

For one thing, Antarctic penguins and seals do not have any surface predators. You put polar bears in there, and they'll just have a smorgasbord. Then we'll just have extinct seals and penguins, and when that happens, extinct antarctic polar bears as well since they ran out of food source.

Political and scientific groups are divided on this one, but you just can't avoid the question: what other options are left? Desperate times call for desperate measures.
