PS3 - Image 1Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has finally given official confirmation that the rumored 40GB PlayStation 3 SKU does indeed exist. What's more, it's launching in Europe next week.

Just like the rumors said, it won't have backwards compatibility with PlayStation 2 titles. The new model features two USB 2.0 ports rather than four and no longer has the multi memory card port.

The new PS3 SKU will be available October 10 for €399 (US$ 565) across all SCEE territories. Keep checking back here for more news.

Same Backward Compatibility as the 80GB.. It has the same firmware as every other PS3 and the 80GB BC emulator is in the firmware.

There is still no EE chip, but thats nothing new. And if you care about the memory slots, then get an 80GB.

No, it has NO PS2 backward compatibility at all. NONE. PS1 games still work.

I'm sure they probably removed the WiFi as well. Will they offer an add on?

Seems pretty useless to remove 2 USB ports though, how much $$$ will that really save? I don't care about the memory card readers, I've never used them (and my memory stick slot doesn't even work.)

Sucks they totally removed the backward compatibility. Microsoft did the XBOX BC completely with software emulation, and XBOX was more powerful than the PS2. Sony maybe should have done that from the beginning, would have saved some money.

Oh well, if you want the best PS3 there is better get the discontinued 60gb version now!

 » Agree'd, but...

I don't think they removed BC completely. You have to read past the QJ misinterpretation. They wont be invest any more money in the current BC. So the games that currently work will be the only ones. They didn't remove the BC from the 40gig units, that would seem impossible since it is software driven. Also on another note, i never really believe what sony Europe ever says. I wait til i hear from Sony America or Japan. There seems to be a division that every magazine or news site asks Sony Europe because they always reply to their questions, but Sony Europe never seems to have all the facts. One case to point this out would be the "No price drop" from SCEE, then announced a week later by Sony America. This was the same thing with the 80gig version.

Just what i have noticed, like with QJ, take Sony Europe with a grain of salt.

I'll admit I'm confused over it given the software support, however all the websites are mentioning that BC has removed from the new model (Gamespot, IGN, etc).

There's no misinterpretation. We're just reporting what the press release said. Here's a quote straight off of it in case you're interested:

"The new model is no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation®2 titles, reflecting both the reduced emphasis placed on this feature amongst later purchasers of PS3, as well as the availability of a more extensive line-up of PS3 specific titles (a total of 65 titles across all genres by Christmas)."

I am sure that they wouldn't be stupid enough to take out one of the cheapest things in it which is WiFi and sell it as an add on at the most outrageous rip off price. That would be completely retarded of them. Microsoft done the Xbox BC completely. Yeah right if you count 30% of the games on Xbox as complete BC.

Ok... Sony's explanation for getting rid of the 20gb was that ppl didn't like the stripped down version... what's going to make em change their minds less than a year later? an extra 40gb? I dun think so.

Also, they could of taken out many a thing... but backwards compatibility?!!

GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT AND POST THE TRUTH........... IT WILL BE BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE (Software Emulation)....You shouldnt even be able to write these dumb articles if you cant comprehend something as simple as that. Quit spewing this crap all over this site

SONY HAVE SAID it will NOT be backwards compatible... Just read above and stop trying to be a knowitall.
Our games sites, listing the new model, all say it.
In fact, here's one:

 » well maybe

it's an excuse for us to go and purchase a PS2 as well if we don't already have one. I'm sure Sony has a much greater profit margin on that device. That being said, dropping the price $100 helps offset the cost so one can go an purchase a ps2. ultimatley it gives Sony More $$$$. Just an analogy, but it is something to think about.
