PS3 FW 1.80 now out - Image 1 Just a few hours before May 24 and guess what decided to spook everyone on the PlayStation Network? Apparently, the latest PS3 v1.80 Firmware is now out. Thanks to JollyRoger, Saint21, and salimdao for giving us a heads up.

Just a while ago, JollyRoger dropped us a line, saying:

Hi guys, its about 9:15pm here in phoenix and still wednesday, buy 1.80 just came out and I'm downloading it now, so let everyone know, LAter!

Saint21, meanwhile, confirmed a couple of details for us:

What was mentioned earlier is true. When it comes to dvd upscaling, some dvd's wouldn't upconvert through component or d-terminal. You can zoom in Photo as well as trim. New slide show created.

Right now, we're still downloading the firmware and there's still no sign of any changelog. We'll keep you guys updated though - we're just kept in suspended animation as we wait for the update to finish... Right now, we just wanted to let you guys know about its availability. So get a-downloading, folks!

UPDATE: Cool beans. Our download's finished and I made sure to write down the list of features that FW 1.80 will give you. I've reproduced them below, word for word. Check them out:
  • You can now upscale the video content of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 format software to HD resolution.
  • You can now copy saved data from PlayStation and PlayStation2 format software to a memory card or memory card (8MB) (for PlayStation 2) using a memory card adaptor.
  • You can now upscale video content of DVDs to HD resolution. However, some DVDs cannot be upconverted when outputting through component or D-Terminal connectors.
  • Support has been added to allow remote play over the Internet.
  • You can now display image files and play music and video files that are saved on a remote device with server functionality (such as a PC or digital video recorder) over a network.
  • Support for a print function has been added under [Photo]. For more information on supported printers, refer to the SCE Web site for your region.
  • Support for zoom and trimming has been added under [Photo].
  • A new type of slideshow has been added as a feature under [Photo].

 » PS3 FIRMWARE 1.8 FTW!!!

omg you guys 1.8 is the answer to all our prayers. here is my noted changelog:

you can print photos from supported printers

you can access files from your computer (music, photos, movies)

you can upscale DVDs to 1080p/24Hz

you can upscale PS1/PS2 games to 1080p/24Hz

you can access RemotePlay from your psp online (anywhere in the world)

and one thing that Sony forgot to note in the changelog. There are two new settings under Video Settings that allow you to enable Super-White color on Y/Pb/Pr HDMI connections, as well as Full color on RGB HDMI connections. I enabled these and I started seeing colors that I haven't even seen before! Just kidding, but there is definitely a noticeable difference in color when these settings are enabled.

 » tyutyu!

You are so narrow minded! We all have PC's already! We have had them for years. Mine even happens to be an HTPC. That is not what this update is about.

Where you are missing the big picture is that I now have a nice server-client relationship between them. All I need is an AC outlet and a TV and I can stream video anywhere in the house. Even outside if I so choose. Why can I do this? It's simple, my PS3 also has built in wireless so I am not even limited by a wired network. TV, PS3, and an extension cord means video on demand anywhere that I want it.

This system was made for those with creative uses for it. It was made by forward thinkers for forward thinkers.

you completely miss the point. It already plays games, and in case you didn't pay attention, sony has ALWAYS meant for it to do more than just games. Of course they're gonna add new features, and some of them overlap with what PCs can do.

This means i don't gotta fire up my old junker computer for those things. Just because you won't bother to get off your ass and make some money for one (I'm 15, worked my ass off for mine) doesn't mean you need to ***** and moan online about it.

M$ just released Vista, and what features does it have? Mmmmostly things Macs have had for years.

media servers, movie streaming, new photo slide show, trimming feature, can save PS/PS2 games back to memory cards now via the adapter, remote play via hotspots (PSP/Laptop/etc) and even virtual keyboard enhancements.

Also, remote play works like a charm. I haven't gotten a chance to test the upscaling other than on FF12 and it looks marginally better than before. All in all, this is an amazing update.

Quite honestly I downloaded the update to upscale my ps2 games. And the first thing I did was fire up KH and once inside the game behold. More stretch marks and alasing than a pregnant belly... Ok the dvd upscale works ok. But seriously Sony is losing my interest with every promise they break. Just so we are clear here. Stretching is not the same as scaling. Let the nerdy fanboy flaming begin.

» Don't waste time downloading I agree so stop hyping what isnt so good

I agree about the stretching it looks horrible so please stop making out its something special because when I read these posts and downloaded the firmware I was more than a bit disappointed with it so please stick to FACTS and not just trying to hype..

   Re: Folding Junkie! - 2007-05-24
 » What?

It was stretching a 640x480 signal before! That is why when you hit the PS button everything was big, blurry, fuzzy, and nasty.

Try hitting your PS button to exit the game now. It's crystal clear and in HD! You most likely don't even have a PS3 because every single BC game that I put in looked better. They don't look like a PS3 game because they are not PS3 games. Be realistic about it! It stopped stretching when you turned on scaling. The difference now is the aspect ratio has changed because HD is widescreen and SD is not.

Why are all the losers that say that it sucks, ALWAYS UNREGISTERED. Could they be Xbots in disguise?

   Re: Anon (Unregistered) - 2007-05-24

aspect ratio and resolution are 2 difrent things dumb ass if the streching bothers you turn ps1/2 upscaler to normal aspect ratio fortunately most off the ps2 games i want to play have a 16:9 setting

» How to find Media Servers

The eaisest way i know how to do this is through Windows Media Player, but you have to upgrade to version 11. Once you have this, go to the options menu and select the "library" tab. Under this tab, click on "configure sharing" and turn sharing on. After this is on, do a search on your PS3 again and it should find your PC. But your PC will first ask for permission to either give access or deny the incoming connection from the PS3, so accept the connection through your PC and it should then found by your PS3.

I believe you could also use the Zune Software as it is also the same procedure for the Xbox 360 setup. I also heard Nero Home should also work.

System update 2.0 was fake. Probably a rumor started by a desperate PS3 owner wishing the PS3 had the features the 360 had for over a year. Also, the PS3's "scaler" sucks because it's just a linear stretcher.

Remember, it's sony you're dealing with. I know what to expect because I have a PSP and I never updated it from 1.5!
