PS3 rumors on price cuts - Image 1Good news for gamers, if it turns out to be true. According to GameDaily, the earlier report of a PlayStation 3 US$ 100 price cut now has some kind of confirmation.

After some nosing around, the guys at GameDaily got to talk with a merchandising manager for the electronics retailer who confirmed the rumored price-cut (which will drop the price tag of Sony's console to US$ 499).

The anonymous manager also went on to say that the price cut is "retail-wide", meaning the said price cut was given by SCEA. The hundred dollar price cut will supposedly take place on July 12, though the ads hailing it will go live a couple of days later on July 15.

Hmm... What do you think? Is the price cut confirmed or plausible? We'll have to take into account that Sony is still keeping mum about the subject and the fact that the "anonymous" manager is, well... anonymous. We'll have to see how this goes when Sony decides to release a official announcement. Stay tuned.

UPDATE: Reuters UK is now reporting that their correspondents were able to have a word with Sony President Ryoji Chubachi regarding the rumors circulating around about a PlayStation 3 price cut that is supposed to take effect on July 12.

Here are the exact words of Chubachi: "At present we have no plans to cut the PS3 price". Despite these, we have to keep in mind that the above mentioned date will coincide during this year's E3. So for all you hopefuls out there, there's still a possibility that Sony is just denying this now and then confirm it come E3.

That could be one scenario and another possibility is that Sony President meant exactly just what he said. We'll keep an eye on this one and update you as more developments come up.

i already have PS3!
people that haven't bought 1 up to now are cheapskates. dont give me money trouble crap, if you really want one you can save money, if you cant save money you are not entitled to have a ps3. go play it on some console rental place. next gen gaming is a pricey hobby, if you cannot support your hobby, dont make it your hobby, find some hobby that your pocket can handle.
beside to fully utilize ps3 you must purchase a pricey hdtv too because your old RF sdTV will not do ps3 justice. you are better off playing ps2 which is cheap nowadays.

Now would be a retarded time for Sony to do the price cut anyway. It would get some attention right now, but not enough to really effect sales because this is a bad buying time. I picked up my PS3 the first day so I don't really care, but I do think there will be a price cut this holiday season. Most likely to coincide with Black Friday and to create a holiday season buzz to move a lot of consoles. Especially with all the games coming out between Sep-Dec.

 » umm

Cutting the price does not assosiate with the date of cutting it... Just because sony cuts it now and not near the holidays doesnt mean people during the holidays wont buy it. People during the holiday will still buy what their kids want and if they want a ps3 then they might get them one if its 499 instead of 599. Parents dont know if the console's price has been slashed cuz they can care less about video games.

 » Too much monies

Its simply too damned expensive. PS3 is the only console I want.. but I simply cannot justify the expense. I'd love to hop on the bandwagon, but there is no good reason to.

With Sony currently attacking PSP users left and right, Im of the mind not to invest another penny in any of their ventures. Im more apt to rev up my torrents and go pirate crazy on PSP software.

For now, Im waiting to see if FF13 is in fact exclusive.. if its not, I feel I have no reason to waste my money on stupid Japanese Overlords.

Bring the price down or go f-u-c-k yourselves!

You say that you would love to 'jump on the bandwagon'. but if you did that, it would mean that you are not going to get a PS3.

The game will still be there with a lot of other games to back it up...

I think Sony has no choice but to price cut. E3 is the best time for them to do it.

   by hah (Unregistered) - 2007-07-06
 » hah

I think the price cut was meant for AFTER e3 when Sony wins the show with its amazing titles. Think about it. What does MS have that is going to wow us? How about Nintendo? Their biggest game is not even playable at e3. I think Sony knows it will steal the show this year and a way for them to make it even better is to release a price drop after people are going crazy for the new ps3 lineup. It just sucks that this was exposed before e3. I guess it will still have the same effect. It doesn't really matter to me as me and my brother both own PS3's already.

   by whoelse (Unregistered) - 2007-07-06
 » well

This is the right time for a price cut for a number of reasons:

1. E3. Biggest event of the year and what better than to steal the show with big new of a price cut.

2. Manufacturing Cuts. We hard about the price cuts on making it so there is room for a price cut.

3. Holiday Season. Now its the holiday season soon everywhere, people will be spending money for stuff to do over the holidays. They hear about the PS3 and the rush to get it.

4. New games. New games are starting to flow in. Throw everything all at once to get a huge intake.

Theres a video of this guy giving ''facts'' about the PS3. He said he think the auto disk feed was scary... And he said it leaves fingerprints --_-- I told him to get a damn cloth and clean it.

» "At present we have no plans to cut the PS3 price"

I really doubt this statement. They should have just refused to comment instead of this, which I suspect is a total lie. Of course they wouldn't want people knowing early.

1. This was probably supposed to be a big deal at E3. They don't want the hype ruined just because somebody got a Circuit City ad early.

2. The price cut starts on the 12th. If they announce a price cut before they actually do it, PS3 sales will completely stop. It would cause a week of almost zero sales. Who's going to buy a PS3 for $600 when they could wait a few days and get one for $500?

   by Vsions (Unregistered) - 2007-07-06
 » Price cut necessary

I enjoy my PS3 but Sony needs to cut the price to become more competetive with the other consoles. I have a number of friends that wish to purchase the system but dont want to pay 600 dollars, understandably.

by The Real Dave (Unregistered) - 2007-07-06
 » Eventually 499$ ? Big deal.

That would be just a start to get some sales over the summer time.
If that. Cause who needs a console without games ?

Make it 399$ around the holidays this year.
Include a rumble controller.
And hope for lots of AAA games like GTA IV or Assassin`s Creed ( which hopefully turns out as good as it looks ).
Then..., Sony would be somewhere in the ballpark again.

   Re: zeromatrix (Unregistered) - 2007-07-06
 » ...

There would be a 399 ps3 if they reduced it to 100. So it would be the same price as the 360 but with blu-ray, 8 gigs more hd space, memory card slots, HDMI and an already rechargable controller.

   Re: Eclipze_ (Unregistered) - 2007-07-06
 » Re: zeromatrix

Plus a hell of a lot of games will be out. And the PS3 has memory stick slots, SD/ mini SD slot, a CF slot, and removeable Hard drive, lol and free online.
by The Real Dave (Unregistered) - 2007-07-06
 » ...oh thats right.

Of course i was talking about the full fledged version of the PS3 for 399$.
Just as i only notice the 360 with a harddrive and all.

Who cares about the third world versions of any console.

 » @ zeromatrix and all

Game consoles are the last place where you want to be in an exclusive niche.
Cause game producers look at numbers.
They make games for popular consoles.

If there was a good reason to own a PS3 at this time , i would have one.
But there is none. NONE.

So , let Sony roll out the 499$ price tag , and see how nobody cares.
As of now , the PS3 is insignificant when it comes to gaming.

   Re: Junr (Unregistered) - 2007-07-08
 » re: @zeromatrix and all

Im sorry, but your post is absolutely absurd. 499$ is a steal considering everything the ps3 can do. You should be grateful they're reducing it at all. And given the choice, I think consumers would rather pay 500$ for a PS3 than 400$ for a system that has a 30% failure rate.

Shut up you *****, FF 13 is exclusive and has been confirmed by the FF guy himself...and MGS4 will remain exclusive as well according to Hideo Kojima...i do not seriously think 360 can handle FF13...

Hey, VSG. You don't have to act like some sort of gaming aristocrat. Preaching like your some sort of twisted Rabbi. Your just looking at it through one point of view. A $100 price cut could be the deal sealer for many people considering a PS3. It's not being cheap, it's getting the best deal and getting the most out of your money. And yes, I do have PS3 and an HDTV. But if I would've waited a little longer I could have gotten a better HDTV for the same price and a less expensive PS3 with 5 free blue ray movies. Thats the art of saving money. The biggest reason so much of America is in debt is most likely because of impulse spending. You wait a little longer, shop a little smarter, you get the same exact thing everyone has. Only difference is you have more money in your pocket.

well there is a 100 dollar price cut just go look at like bestbuy.com, buy.com, or anywhere its 499 now
