*UPDATE* PS3s strap up: Firmware 1.92 rolls out - Image 1 Yes folks, Sony sneaked in another update to your CELL BE-powered console, and if you log in to the PlayStation Network right now, you could be prompted to advance to firmware 1.92.

We have reason to believe that the update is simultaneously released worldwide, although the official statement of release follows in a certain order: Japan, Europe, and North America.

Details on the new PS3 firmware's changelog are sketchy (we're still downloading it), but we'll update you on what we find out about FW 1.92. Rumor has it that the update should allow for downloading to USB storage devices (or support it), plus certain updates to allow Incognito's Warhawk to be played over Sony's servers.

We all know we need something more concrete, so feel free to confirm this. Just over a month fresh from firmware 1.90, we're now seeing another FW update, adding and tons of changes to Sony PlayStation 3s worldwide.

Thanks to salimdao and dyll for the heads up!

UPDATE: Just after a mere few hours of going live, a lot of PlayStation 3 users have already downloaded the official firmware 1.92. While Sony has yet to release an official changelog, the PS3 community took it upon itself to discover the developments that were rolled out with the update.

The following information below were from QJ.NET readers, our own observation, forum members, as well as those who are actively discussing this surprise update over at the official PlayStation Forum:
  • Ability to add Flash wallpapers
  • Seemingly faster XMB load times
  • XMB screensaver option (which was there prior to this but just became popular because of this)
  • Improvements on Internet Browser application
  • Auto power off for the controllers
  • Thumbnails in the video section
  • Synchronized game clips in the games folder load up
  • Faster transition from game to XMB
  • Updated PSOne/PS2 controller compatibility

UPDATE 2:
The QJ.NET PS3 readers have done a good job of updating us with list of tweaks Sony made on this firmware update. On this second update though, we have an official bit of info straight from Sony Japan's website. Note: Be warned of the engrish courtesy of online translations:
  • Performance for the additional item which is transmitted with PLAYSTATION®Store was strengthened.
  • PlayStation® of the part in PS3® and operational status of the PlayStation®2 standard software were renewed. As for up-to-date operational status < private search sight> With you can verify.
If you have something to add to this "unofficial changelog" or just want to discuss FW 1.92 with other PS3 owners, please feel free to do so through our comment section below.

 » Rumors?

Rumor has it that the update should allow for downloading to USB storage devices (or support it), plus certain updates to allow Incognito's Warhawk to be played over Sony's servers.

These are very odd rumors considering Warhawks already playable over Sony's servers since beta, and that the USB storage has been supported probably since before the PS3 even launch.

So somebody doesn't own a PS3 or someone needs to do some more learning about their PS3.

   Re: Gromer (Unregistered) - 2007-09-04

The problem on Warhawk is that allot of the servers are buggy and can not be connected to at all and/or for very long.

Ebay makes buying things you don't need way too easy. Combine that with alcohol, and the rest is history.

Now I just want to get a decent exclusive game. Looks like pretty much everyone agrees Lair sucks so I'm still waiting.

I also don't want to update my PS3 firmware until I have to. I'm still on 1.5.

LAIR rocks...

   Re: CHUCKINGROCKSATSPACESHIPS - 2007-09-05
 » LAIR...

is one of the best games ever made. I love it. It is addicting and fun! Don't believe what you hear about the controls. It controls very well. You just have to get used to the controls. Playing other games that used the motion sensor and also this one in the tutorial mode makes it way easier to understand and very easy to play. I love it!

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-09-05

If I buy Lair and it indeed sucks you'll pay me back right?

Does this update fix the control issues or not?

Warhawk is way more fun. It has some bugs that bearly show up (at least for me) but its not somthing that should stop you from buying that game.
(anyways there fixing it)
Its like a 3rd person battlefield. + Im pretty sure there working on new maps already.

   Re: JL (Unregistered) - 2007-09-04
 » In-game music

Only if the game developers put it in.

Xbox is totalitarian to their game developers. (they are extremely strict with heir games)

Where as Sony is very loose, and trusts the dev's judgment. Sony has already given the tools to the developers, so music can be streamed off of the HDD. Unfortunately, no developer has put it into their game so far, so no in-game music.:(

Though it has been said, on the official playstation blog, that in the next big update, there will be in-game XMB. I assume this means that you could be playing a game, press the "PS" button, go to the xmb, start playing your song, and go beck to your game, while the song plays.

I hope I have answered your question.
