Wii U controller: More secrets revealed
The next-gen console is more than meets the eye.
With the recent announcment of the Nintendo Network.
Just when you think you know everything about Nintendo's innovative -- and risky -- new Wii U tablet controller, the company throws another factor into the mix.
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed this week that the touch-enabled controller will also implement near-field communication (NFC) tech. As an NFC device, the controller will be able to interact with objects equipped with NFC tags.
It's the same set of standards used in some smartphones and smart cards. By touching an NFC-tagged item -- or bringing it in very close range -- with an NFC device, the objects interact via radio communication.
"By installing this functionality, it will become possible to create cards and figurines that can electronically read and write data via noncontact NFC and to expand the new play format in the video game world," Iwata said during an earnings briefing.
"Adoption of this functionality will enable various other possibilities such as using it as a means of making micropayments," he said, a hint at Nintendo's expanding digital distribution plans.
NFC technology has been around for years. But for game development, one interesting implementation of NFC only recently saw commercial release: Activision's console game Skylanders, in which players can buy NFC-tagged figurines, place them on an NFC-equipped pod, and bring those figurines to life in-game.
Iwata described the tech in terms of the Wii U, but did not give specifics on implementation. "The NFC I'm referring to here is the noncontact NFC standard that is compatible with FeliCa and MIFARE, and is expected to be widely used around the world in the near future," he said.

Rayman Origins coming to PC DRM Free
Ubisoft have learnt from their past mistakes and making one of the best platformers and coolest games ever made DRM-free later this year.
Rayman Origins surprised everyone late last year with it's release seemingly from nowhere, it turned out to be one of the most colourful beautiful and friendly games I have ever seen, played or spent money on and if you have a PS3 or 360, I suggest you do the same.
Ubisoft announced that the Platformer will be out on March 30th on PC and in better news, all retail copies of the game will be shipped with no DRM. Digital versions will be saddled with whomever they are distributed through (i.e. Steam). So yes the very same Ubisoft who once said that "always on DRM"and regularly blames piracy for their lack of PC games, are sending a game out in the real world to deal with the pirates and hackers and evil people of the internets.
I think it's a bold move from Ubisoft to show they can make a game, have it be successful and (hopefully) port it successfully to the PC and still make a bundle off it. I think the game would really suit being on the PC, as more and more of my favourite platformers are turning up on there. Also with controller support from classic USB controllers and for those new-gen people who still want to use their 360, go right ahead.
The PC specs were also released and are as follows:
Here are the announced system specs:
Minimum configuration
OS:  Windows® XP SP3 / Windows Vista® SP2 / Windows® 7 SP1
Processor: Intel Pentium IV 3.00 Ghz or AMD Athlon64 3000+ @ 1.8 Ghz
Memory: 1 GB Windows XP / 1.5 GB Windows Vista – Windows 7
Graphics: 128 MB DirectX®9 / Radeon X600XT or GeForce 6800GT
DirectX®: DirectX 9.0c or higher
Sound: DirectX 9.0-compliant sound card
Recommended configuration
OS:  Windows® XP SP3 / Windows Vista® SP2 / Windows® 7 SP1
Processor: Intel Core2Duo E4400 @ 2.00 Ghz or AMD Athlon64X2 3800+ @ 2.00Ghz
Memory: 2 GB Windows XP / Vista / Windows 7
Graphics: 256 MB DirectX®9 / Radeon HD 2600XT or GeForce 8600GT
DirectX®: DirectX 9.0c or higher
Sound: DirectX 9.0-compliant sound card
Rayman Origins was release for the 360, PS3 and Wii last year in November. In addition to the PC, the game is also headed to the Playstation Vita and Nintendo 3DS on February 14 and March 20 respectively. It looks like Ubisoft have all the bases covered and I do hope it pays off for them. More Rayman Origins, less of the Rabbids, I say!

Call of Duty locking DLC to ELite accounts
More Elite features include flipping the bird to consumers and making tonnes off money by being crazy
So Modern Warfare 3 made over a billion dollars last year and whilst Activision is tight lipped on how much has been made from their Elite service so far. The first two maps for MW3 have been released and the next few already teased but many CoD players have discovered a recent change in the DLC policy. This would have people shelling out more money for their maps but other profiles on the system will be unable to get their content without a second or separate Elite membership.
On the Call of Duty forums, there were 8 pages worth on a single thread of upset players who had their friends and family accounts discontinued or altered with no new maps because they didn't have a secondary account. What's even worse is that the new policy doesn't really work with the terms of services you encounter when you first download the content, which rather plainly states on the loading screen that: "You can use this item on the first Xbox 360 console you downloaded it to. Access to this item will also be granted to all users on this first console."
What would usually happen is that DLC on the 360 would be user agnostic and while your purchase (or any redownloads of purchased items) would be tied to your account, any XBLA games or in-game DLC would be on your HD and playable by any account on the 360, which you own. Microsoft's own digital ownership scheme, mimics real life ownership, so as long as someone has access to the content, you can let someone borrow it from you and play it on their own account.
However, with the CoD Elite service, you cannot do so and require your own user account to access the maps and DLC. For example, a single copy of the game could set you back several $50 a year per account to play on.
Whilst Activision is yet to make a comment on it, I'm sure the more "financially savvy" (See: Greedy) companies will probably adopt this system to make sure each user or member of a console will fork out a piece of dough to make sure they make up for the "lost millions" from pirates.
Not sure how many Call of Duty fans there are on this site, but I'm sure that more often than not there are criticism's spread far and wide about their handling of their Elite service as well as their user base. I do like Call of Duty in theory and in some aspects.
I think if the Black Ops zombie game was just a downloadable title I would buy that and every bit of DLC in existance, but alas we are burdened by terrible storylines, unrelatable characters and some insane visuals. They're not terrible games but their effect on the industry (see: BF3, Medal of Honor, etc.) can bar none see them as a culprit.

Steam releasing official iPhone and Android apps
Whilst it is in beta right now, Valve hope to roll it out properly before the end of 2012
I finally got my first smartphone this year and whilst I thought I was incredibly behind in my reaches for the most technically advanced thing since swearing robot's, it appears that big comapanies are only catching up to the big, bad mobile phone platform.
Steam released the app in it's current beta format yesterday and is only accessible to those who signed up for the beta on Steam can participate in the App which is for Android and iOS devices.
The app itself is not dissimilar to apps on both marketplaces which pertain to keeping up to date with your friends, browsing your community groups, profiles, check screenshots, user-generated content, sales and everything else Steam related. This is just an official app and it's free so it's good to see Steam not trying to compete with the other apps just for the dollar, dollar bill, y'all.
Gabe Newell spoke abou the service saying that it came "from many requests" from their user base. "Mobile is changing the way people interact, play games and consumer media, and the Steam app is part of our commitment to meet customer demands and expand the service functionality of Steam to make it richer and more accessible for everyone."
Anyone can currently download the app, put in their details and can browse till their hearts content. Hopefully it will all be optimised. I currently am not apart of the beta but will give my two cents when I can get a taste test of the cool little app.

The massive PSN hit is expanding its reach to PCs.
PixelJunk Eden, the innovative platformer and enormously successful PSN title, is finally making the jump from consoles to PC. Q-Games, the company behind the PixelJunk series, has just confirmed that Eden is on its way to Steam. The game features a few minor tweaks, such as a revamped save system, but is for the most part unchanged from the PSN version.
PixelJunk Eden will run you $9.99, and you can download the game’s soundtrack for an additional $5.99. It’s a natural jump for the title – Steam has long been a bastion of independent development, and Q-Games’ Dylan Cuthbert praised the way the service supports indie devs when making the announcement.
Steam is a solid platform that should help skyrocket the game to further success. With the game doing so well on the relatively niche PSN market, there’s no telling how well it could do once it hits the much larger (and usually more passionate) Steam community.
We’ll just have to wait and see how it goes. In the meantime, best of luck to the Q-Games crew. We love indies!

Bikinis are coming to Soul Calibur. At least Namco is being honest.
Enjoying Soul Calibur V? Of course not – it doesn’t hit shelves until January 31. But just because the game hasn’t been released yet doesn’t mean there can’t be DLC, right? Right. Namco Bandai has announced the first round of Soul Calibur V DLC, set to land at the same time as the game’s European release on February 3.
So what’s in this first batch of DLC, you ask? According to Namco Bandai, the DLC contains “exotic costumes.” Loosely translated, this means face paint, wigs and yes, bikinis. While it seems a little ridiculous to introduce bikinis into a fighting game, this is, after all, Soul Calibur. It’s good to see Namco embracing its target demographic.
This pack is the first of three set for February release, with the second landing February 14 and the third landing February 28. The next two updates contain accessories like clothing, masks and “breast plates,” and all three updates are packed with some classic Soul Calibur music. Each DLC pack is priced at 160 MS Points/ €1.99.
What do you think of day one DLC? It doesn’t seem so terrible when it’s purely aesthetic items.
Also, are you planning on buying any bikinis?

Find out what evils lurk in the special edition of Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.
It goes without saying that if you’re releasing a popular game, you almost have to create an additional collector’s edition with some extra goodies. This is certainly the case for The Witcher 2, which is scheduled to hit the Xbox 360 on April 17. The Dark Edition, which runs a relatively fair $79.99, is packed with the accoutrements we’ve come to expect from collector’s edition boxes.
Here’s what you’ll get with the Dark Edition version of the game:
World map
Quest book
Making-of DVD
Soundtrack
Stickers
Art book
Wolf head medallion
Pretty standard fare for a CE. Art book, soundtrack, some sort of game-related trinket. But that’s not all! Depending on where you pre-order the Dark Edition, you’ll also receive some of the following loot:
Comic book
Two wolf head t-shirts
Medallion keychain
Xbox Live Avatars
Avatar pet
No clue on what items will be available from what retailers, so stay tuned and we’ll update you as details emerge. In the meantime, are you planning on picking up Witcher 2 for the Xbox?

Nintendo takes another step into the present with its own digital delivery service.
The Nintendo investor briefing held early this morning in Japan was chock full of good news for the company. In addition to predicting that the 3DS will finally hit profitability in 2012 and announcing an all-new Super Mario side-scroller, the company had quite the bombshell to drop – a digital delivery service called the Nintendo Network.
Satoru Iwata, Nintendo president, offer up a few details on what gamers can expect from the new service. Expect the Communities system to return, which allows people who aren’t on each other’s friends lists to play together. There’s also full support for DLC, a feature on which Nintendo has been way behind the curve. You’ll also find a wide range of downloadable games, similar to the Nintendo eShop but more robust in both lineup and functionality.
All in all, it looks like Nintendo has finally realized that if it wants to stay competitive in the next console generation, it has to dramatically up its online game. The Wii’s online capabilities were decent, but friend codes and other unnecessary complexities dragged it down. Here’s hoping the new Nintendo Network will alleviate some of those problems and make the Wii U a more online-ready machine.

Blizzard gets rid of companion pets in Diablo III, but it’s not all about their appearance.
Diablo III, just months from its theoretical release, is still being constantly tweaked by the folks at Blizzard. Customary to the company’s traditional style, changes and tweaks will likely be added to the game until the day it gets printed on disc. The latest change, announced by Blizz Community Manager Nethaera, is the removal of Scrolls of Companion.
If you don’t have the good fortune of being in the Diablo III beta, Scrolls of Companion are simply spells that summon a companion pet to fight with your character. Nethaera lists two primary reasons for the dev team’s removal of the pets: Number one, it seemed like the pets had become mandatory for efficient play, and number two, some of the pets were just too cute for the world of Diablo.
She did mention that the team isn’t ruling out companion pets forever, and that they’d probably revisit the system once the game goes gold. In the meantime, you’ll just have to quest without these helpful and adorable critters.

Take that, Windows phones!
Want to play Xbox Live games but don’t have your Xbox nearby? How about an Android phone? According to one developer with a bit of inside information, Microsoft is currently working on an Xbox Live app for Android which will bring many of the service’s functionalities directly to Android users – including the ability to play games from Xbox Live Arcade.
This story actually broke thanks to a job posting on the official Microsoft careers website. The posting indicated that Microsoft had intentions to bring the Live service to Windows Phone, iOS and “other mobile platforms.” A quick bit of calling around, and it was easy to find a developer willing to confirm that Android was on the table. It’s a bit of an odd piece of news, since Microsoft has leaned so heavily on Xbox Live being exclusive to Windows Phone.
However, it’s always good to give your customers more ways to access your service. And while Microsoft isn’t conceding defeat in the mobile wars, they are aware that the Android and iOS markets are trouncing them in terms of mobile game sales. If they want to compete, bringing the Live app to Android and other platforms is essentially the only way to do it.
There’s no information on when we can expect an Android Xbox Live app, but we here at QJ will keep you posted as details emerge.

Nintendo makes official what most have us have known for months.
Nintendo’s Wii U console was expected to land in 2012, although we’ve been waiting for some sort of official word from the company on an exact release window. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata finally put an end to the speculation in interviews conducted last week, confirming once and for all that the Wii U is targeted at a pre-holiday 2012 launch.
Iwata hedged his bets, of course, and let reports know that Nintendo’s plans could always evolve as the market shifts or development progresses on the device. Iwata also stated that the Wii U’s release is currently scheduled only for “key markets,” including the U.S., Europe, Japan and Australia.
Honestly, Nintendo has to get their system out in 2012. They can’t afford to go head-to-head with both Microsoft and Sony, and the Wii’s head start on the market is a large part of its incredible success. With Sony and Microsoft narrowing their console release schedules, Nintendo’s chance to leap ahead of the pack is getting smaller and smaller.
Will you purchase a Wii U, or are you waiting for the new Xbox/PlayStation?

Retailers can’t keep the 3DS on shelves, but Nintendo is still doing worse now than in years before.
Nintendo released its official numbers today, and things don’t look too good. Despite the fact that the Nintendo 3DS outsold all other systems combined last week (in Japan, of course), Nintendo is still reporting major losses for the last quarter. According to earnings reports released by the company, Nintendo lost $623 million between the months of April and December 2011.
The company doesn’t seem confident in the near future, revising its original forecast of $580 million in losses through March 2012 to $838. Nintendo noted that while Nintendo 3DS hardware is moving at a much higher rate, the massive price cut they dropped on the system is contributing to their financial ails.
In one last bit of bad news, Nintendo revised its original sales predictions for the 3DS, Wii, and DS dropping expected 3DS and Wii sales by two million each, and DS sales by about 500,000. The decreased sales projections have been taken into account for the new loss predictions for 2012.
It’s worth noting that while Nintendo reports these numbers as a “loss,” all it means is that the company made less money in a particular quarter than they did in the same quarter of the previous year. Nintendo is still churning out massive profits, and the company is far from being financially unstable. It’s just the way companies go about reporting their finances.
We’ll keep you posted as other companies release their sales numbers and financial forecasts. 2011 was likely a tough year for everyone, with console hardware aging and rumors of the next-gen on the horizon.

mfninsa1Retailers can’t keep the 3DS on shelves, but Nintendo is still doing worse now than in years before.

Why Microsoft’s plan to block used games may not be such a bad idea.
Rumors surfaced yesterday, thanks to an insider source, that the next-gen Xbox system currently in development might contain some sort of anti-used game technology. We’re not exactly sure what that means, or how it would be implemented, but the basic gist is that the new Xbox may not play used games at all.
News of this function fired off a massive Internet backlash, with countless commenters railing about how they’d never buy an Xbox 720 (or whatever) if they can’t play used games. And while I certainly agree that limiting your customers’ choices is a very dangerous way to move forward in business, I think that Microsoft may actually be doing the right thing here.
Put aside, for the moment, the arguments against publishers getting cash for used sales. We all know it doesn’t make sense for used games to be treated differently than used cars. The bottom line, however, is that publishers want a slice of that pie, and they’re going to do anything they can to get it. The current solution is the Online Pass, which most gamers would agree is a complete disaster.
Online Passes are engineered to ensure that publishers get a taste of any after-market sale of their games, but mostly serve as enormous headaches to the people that bought the game new. Anyone that had to suffer through Battlefield 3’s ridiculous registration process will know what I mean. And as we move forward, more and more publishers are going to slap Online Passes on their games.
The way I see it, we have two potential used game futures: In the first, every game we buy will have an Online Pass from whatever publisher owns the game, requiring an obnoxious registration code and all the trappings we’ve already encountered. In the second, used games are blocked at the console level, and you purchase your Online Pass directly through Xbox Live or PSN.
Having the console deal with used game access eliminates the need for cumbersome Online Passes, and ensures you have access to Xbox’s support network instead of some random person at whatever publisher happened to make your game. It’s not ideal, but it’s certainly better than what we have at the moment.
I don’t agree with the concept of preventing players from accessing used games, but it’s not like Online Passes are going to fade away. One way or another, we’re paying that money to the publisher – would you rather do it through Xbox Live or a dozen different registration websites?
